Windows Media Player - What are the alternatives??

Hey, so wmp is pissing me off big time at the moment, it doesn't always open when i double click on it (even though the process shows up as running in the task manager..) I cannot delete songs from my library (i right click, hit delete and nothing happens) and i cannot change names or titles of songs (i type new name, press enter and the old name re-appears...)

So i'm thinking of getting a different media player instead... What are my options? What's good and why?? I've used media monkey, don't really like it, and iTunes is no good either, but everything else i'd be open to try...

Obviously i'm looking for something free, what say ye??

Another vote for vlc player here. I downloaded it after a thread like this just to see what all the fuss was about. Haven't used wmp since.

VLC has a very basic interface and works very well, plays everything (that I've found so far anyway).

VLC is too basic really, it doesn't appear to have any library or anything... I'd be looking for something like that... I only use VLC as something to play the odd video file that won't work elsewhere...

You could try winamp. I've tried many as i've a 60Gb+ collection & found it the best i could find. I also liked that its totally configuarble, you can add skins & you can set it to name artists using the album artist id3 tag (unlike many others including itunes), which means compilations will not have each song listed under song artist.

I use Winamp for my music. Never liked Media Player (although havent tried 10 or 11). For movies i use Media Player Classic, with all the codecs installed. And if that doesnt work, then VLC, which does play everything.

WINAMP, WINAMP! - It really kicks the lamba's ass!!!

Nothing beats the new winamp 5.5 with the bento skin... It organises everything perfectly with automatic album pics now and a new feature called "autotagging"
I've about 5,000 songs now and winamp has it all to perfection!

You could try Quentessential. You stale version is a great audio player and there's a development release available that incorporates media library features but I don't know how finished it is yet.

media player classic... plays everything Vlc does, and it lets you scroll volume with the mousewheel

that's something Vlc desperately needs

VLC is solid as a rock but it is lacking a lot of useful features like library management, CD burning, ripping etc. Mediamonkey gets my vote. Its based on the Winamp engine (I think) only it has a lot more features.
