I had acl recon with Mr. Moran about 5 years ago on my left leg and it went like a dream. I took the next appointment which happened to be semi - public private and the operation was in Cappagh Hospital. Hospital were great and had phsyio there regularly until I returned to sports after about 6 months.
2 years ago I blew out my right acl and went back to Mr. Moran, I took the next appointment which was all private in a hospital in Mullingar. They took a lot of money off me, on the way in and as soon as I woke up early the next morning, they kicked me out. They didn't care if I was comfortable or in pain, they just wanted rid of me. They didn't clean it properly and right enough it got infected which hampered my progress for a while because the wound would not seal. I was a bit slack on the physio front ( because I had to organise it myself ) which was a big mistake. Basically I made it back to sport after about 10 months but it was not smooth.
What have I learned. Well :
- Ray Moran is excellent ( I'm sure the other main guys are as well ) , really knows his stuff and has a decent bedside manner, but as he told me - succeeding is only 20% him and 80% yourself. Don't think that he will do the surgery and thats it.
- If you are going private, you are on your own, so don't assume that someone is looking out for you, it's up to you to take control and organise the care you need. In the initial few weeks after the op, don't neglect the wound and make sure you are getting the right physio direction to keep an eye on it.
- Read up on it, there's loads on the internet
- work hard on the rehab ( safely )
