The Boxter however was always considered a great handling and balance motor even if a bit underpowered.

Plus if your GF dont got kids - why would she not want a 2 seat convertible that handles as well as the boxster ? Lucky you

Don't take offence, but it's an unusual situation! Firstly from the point of view that it's very rare that a woman would go for a car like the S4. Women's interest in cars tends to be in 3 categories 1. not a clue. 2. likes something that looks good and 3. know what they're talking about.
Given the S4's credentials as an average looking but high performing car then one would think that this girl is in category 3 there, but any woman I've met in this group always knew what they wanted, so would never ask anyone's opinion!!

Fellas on the other hand range in car interest as much as women range in shoe taste.

If she likes the "puchy-ness" of the 4.2 then she may miss that in the boxter, despite the boxter's finesse in terms of handling compared with the Audi.
A boxter S may fix this problem, but a trade in of an S4 won't fetch too much in this country unfortunately. Whats her budget? A 335Ci might fit the bill...

Everything Ive read about the boxter has been gushing with praise.

Apart from the price! Could make a nice second hand purchase thou.

Can't say I'd be bothered with the older 2.5 myself though. 204bhp isn't a lot.

People seem to be confusing the '00 model S4 with the current one.

The 00 model was a 2.6 twin turbo V6 and not all that great to drive ( from reviews I have read not personal experince admittedly)

The boxster is a totally different animal and widely considered to be a great drivers car.
That could be why it makes sense to me she would want to change.

I suppose the first important thing to consider is if a 2 seater convertible is praticle for her needs..
I have not seen one, but is the boot big enough to handle a large grocery run? Does she have kids, or a large dog? Does she commute home at weekends with luggage, etc. etc.

Only then should she sit down and consider the merits of a boxers performance and handling etc.

There was a 2.7 twin turbo in the RS2. I don't remember a 2.6 twin turbo in any A4. Not saying you're wrong, you could be right, but I never remember it.
According to this roadtest by Autocar, (granted it's the convertable), the 00 - 05 S4 had the 4.2. The RS4 had a twin turbo 4.2 that had a lot more power. THen they brought out the current RS4 with the same sized engine and 414bhp with the front wheels further forward relative to the engine block to give sharper handling.

My recollection is that the 98 on S4 had a 2.7 litre V6 biturbo, and that the RS2, built by Porsche, had a 2.1 litre turbo 4 giving 315 or so bhp.

Actually you could be right there, the RS2 had a tuned version of the 5 cylinder in the Quattro I think. So that'd leave the 2.7 to be in the first S4, and the 4.2 to be in the 2nd S4.

Get a 911! You have the power and the handling in abundance - and you wont be getting a half ass Porsche
