Rugby V Soccer (Again)

So there we have it, yet another example of the gulf between the two sports. I'm honestly puzzled as to why people love it so much.

Last night people could pay at the gate and watch two teams brimming with World Class players putting their bodies on the line, giving it all for a league match. They aren't especially well paid, very very few of them will be able to retire on their earnings, but they stay in Ireland, play their rugby here, are available to go to schools, meet kids on supporters days, sign books and all that malarky.

Meanwhile grossly overpaid people who ply their trade abroad are worshipped, and what do they give in return, **** all.

I'm delighted I'm a rugby fan, I get to watch class player play live for hardly anything, I've met loads of the players even played against some of them. It's bloody brilliant!

I can only imagine how much rugby will continue to grow when entertainment of the quality of Friday night is up against the pap on display in Cyprus tonight.

Agreed

Football is just painful to watch after a rugby match.

Soccer punters are debating whether to not go to next Ireland match or go and jeer the team...rofl.

Great 'supporters'

They are both great games.

Having played and followed both , Rugby is so much better orgaised in this country , never remember a rugby club without hot showers and a full bar !

Soccer in this country is currently in the doldrums , how we miss the like of McGrath, Roy Keane, Kevin Moran , Townsend , Whelan etc etc ..

but anyway , i love them both , especially when me and my team in whatever code are winning .

Have to agree with you Dave. I've never seen a more pathetic display in a sporting event in my life. I would imagine that the fact that a lot of the lads playing now would never have watched an Ireland game growing up would be a reason for their lack of motivation. They have no real connection to the country other than the fact that their granny drove through Co. Carlow back in the forties and as such they're entitled to play for us.

I don't know why any group of fans would waste their time, energy and money to go to a game to boo, or jeer. It just shows the mentality of those planning it.

Whoa there, most of the current squad are lrish born. If people pay good money to protest against a shoddy manager its cos they are angry and want change which shows a passion (however misguided) for the game.

If they don't get tickets for the games that's the best protest they can make.

Paddy Kenny doesn't sound Irish, Clinton Morrisson isn't ...

Even the Irish born players looked like they didn't want to be there. Pathetic is how I'd describe them. Robbie Keane should not be a captain, he hasn't a clue.

How can you say the sport of rugby is "better" than the sport of soccer, because Ireland gave a bad display against Cyprus in one game. Ridiculous, childish stuff.

I think the point of this thread is the fact that the Irish rugby players don't get paid as much as the Irish soccer players, don't get as much praise as the Irish soccer players yet they seem willing and able to put up a good fight against the top sides in the world. Yet yesterday against the team ranked 103 in the world the Irish players, who we're told most of play in one of the best leagues in the world (the premiership) looked like they didn't want to be there. They were outdone by a bunch of part timers who could have put many more past us than they did.

We have a soccer captain who doesn't seem to know his arse from his elbow when it comes to leading a team.

And thats why he is spurs captain too?
The problem lies in the management, simply the irish soccer team have not had a good player motivator in charge since jack charlton. untill that changes they wont succed. The FAI should have done every thing to get martin o'niell.

Regardless of all that sundy, I just think it's fantastic that I can go into town and regularly see guys who play International rugby for Ireland, I can pay a few quid and go see them play, kids get to see Internationals play for even less. Isn't that great, regardless of where the soccer players are from they all live abroad.
