Concerts take place at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin, on 18, 20, 22 and 23 Dublin at 8pm. Just a reminder that The Suitcase - an Opera will play in Belfast's Crescent Arts Centre on Saturday, February 19th 2011 (+44 (028) 90 242338), 7pm, £5. Chicago Opera Vanguard will present sections and arias from their latest work, in collaboration with local artists.

As part of their Belfast residency, COV will offer “Devising Opera”, a two-session (3 hours each) daytime workshop on February 15 & 16 that will explore finding the theatrical, physical, and musical impetus behind found and devised texts.

Composer Eric Reda, Director Karen Yates and Writer/Performer David Kodeski will guide participants through a series of physical and vocal exercises aimed toward creating miniature operatic moments that will culminate in a daytime public presentation.

Participants will be required to research and then bring factual texts to the workshop that illustrate current policies (political and civic), news stories about gay issues, and views on homosexuality in Belfast and Northern Ireland as a whole. This focus complements the subject matter of The Suitcase - an Opera, which concerns a young gay man in New York City in 1950.

Those interested in participating must be comfortable with singing, rhythm, and music. They must be in good physical shape and be willing to improvise shamelessly.

Some of the most striking voices in today’s classical composition are not coming out of the West but from far-flung outposts on the other side of the world. Such a voice is that of Dmitri Yanov Yanovsky. Chicago Tribune 2010

A new series of contemporary music and arts events, ‘Sounds of the Silk Road organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS), will be launched this April as part of the Drogheda Arts Festival.

The first performance of the series will feature work specially commissioned by the LCMS by Dmitri Yanov Yanovsky a composer from Uzbekistan a country at the cross-roads of the rich oriental and Islamic traditions of Central Asia. The work has been has written for world renowned Hilliard ensemble, Ivan Monighetti one of the world’s most accomplished cellists who stunned audiences with his performance at the Drogheda Arts Festival 2010 and of the foremost Irish musicians in the newly formed EQ Ensemble which includes Cliona Doris,harp, Malachy Robinson,bass, Elizabeth Cooney,violin, Cian O'Duill,viola, Maria McGarry,piano, Deirdre O'Leary, clarinet, Susan Doyle, flute, Chris Stynes and Maeve O'Hara, percussion.

The concert will take place in St Peter’s Church of Ireland Drogheda on the 29 April 2011 at 8pm.

This is the first time the Hilliard ensemble, have been involved with an Irish based commission and it is also Dmitri's first Irish commission. Dimitri Yanov-Yanovsky was born in 1963 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. As the musicologist Gerard McBurney says “His remarkable surroundings are vividly reflected in his music. What is most impressive is the skill with which he weaves the colourful threads of contradictory influences into a musical fabric always refined, beautifully patterned and absolutely personal”

The piece ‘Morning’ based on text from Robert Lax's poem ‘Morning’, from his book called Circus of the Sun described by the New York Times as one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. Lax was also a friend of the writer, monk and mystic Thomas Merton.
The performance will also include another of Dmitri's works called Nightmusic - Voices in the Leaves which was written for Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.

World renowned Lydia Kavina will open the concert with a contemporary piece called Kitezh 19. Lydia plays music on a theremin, an electronic instrument which makes music without touching. Lydia has become an icon for performances with the Theramin and will be giving a workshop on the instrument for both beginners and advanced players whilst she is in Ireland.

The concert and events are the latest of several high profile art music events organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society which have brought world renowned composers to Ireland, previously having successfully featured, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Valentyn Silvestov and to the 2010 Drogheda Arts Festival, the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina.

Sounds of the Silk Road is presented by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in association with Create Louth. The event is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and financially supported by Create Louth.

Sacred Choral Music – ancient to contemporary

Ireland's international award-winning chamber choir New Dublin Voices joins forces with Vokalensemble Vocappella Innsbruck for a concert of sacred music – ranging from ancient to contemporary – on Holy Wednesday (April 20) in Dublin's Christ Church Cathedral.

Separately and together the two choirs undertake a gripping musical journey, from music long associated with Holy Week – including the famous Miserere by Allegri – to sacred works by living composers currently enjoying huge popularity – including Arvo Pärt, Eric Whitacre and Morten Lauridsen – to exciting new voices, including the Irish premieres of a Crucifixus by Stéphan Nicolay of France and Regina Caeli by the English Cecilia McDowell.

Other composers include Gesualdo, Poulenc, Michael McGlynn and Josep Vila i Casañas. The conductors for these performances are Bernie Sherlock and Claudio Büchler – known to Irish audiences from his previous work here with Opera Ireland and the National Chamber Choir – who will also direct the combined choirs in the concert's substantial closing item, the light-filled, multi-part Lux aeterna by Lauridsen with organist David Bremner.

The amazing Sirin Choir from Russia will perform in St.Nicholas Church ( generally known as the Green Church) Dundalk on 5 May 2011. The programme will include modern day choral masterpieces such as Louth Contemporary Music Society Commissions Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry and John Tavener’s O My People along with a selection of Church Chants and Spiritual verses from the 15th and 16th centuries and a contemporary work by Ivan Moody.Some of the Church Chants will be performed a cappella with a selection of the spiritual verses accompanied by hurdy-gurdy, psaltery or violin. There will also be a choral workshop in Orthodox Chant given by Ivan Moody.

Sirin Choir was formed in 1989 by a group of professional musicians who took the name after a bird of Paradise from Russian Christian legends. Before that Andrey Kotov, Sirin’s Artistic Director spent many years studying Russian sacred folklore in rural settings where these ancient traditions are still preserved. His research has meant that Sirin is uniquely able to present repertoire ranging from the dark, sonorous style of Old Believers’ church to the haunting songs of spiritual wanderers.

The ensemble has presented its interpretation of Russian church and spiritual folk music on extensive concert tours in Russia and Europe and was multifold prizewinner of renowned choral competitions. Sirin took part in the 1st European Symposium for Choral Music in Ljubliana, World Symposium for Choral Music in Rotterdam, gave performances at various festivals, like the festival in Thoronet and the festival of Old Lyon (France), Musica Sacra in Marktoberdorf (Germany), Old Music in Jaroslaw (Poland), Musica Sacra in Maastricht ( Holland), Trialogos (Estonia), Isle de France , Lufthansa Baroque Festival (Great Britain), Cork International Choral festival (Ireland), Sacred Music in Fribourg (Switzerland), Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, Bangkok Christmas Festival (Thailand), Europalia (Belgium) and many others. Sirin's performances were included in the program for celebrating 2000 years of christianity in Jerusalem.

As a special request of Sirin, the Russian composer Vladimir Martynov set texts from the Old Testament's book The Lamentation of Jeremiah to music. The stage version of The Lamentation of Jeremiah, where all roles are performed by Sirin members, had more than 150 performances in Russia, France (as part of the official program of Avignon Theatre Festival), Italy, Germany, Estonia and Sweden. It was awarded with Golden Mask, the highest distinction in Russian theatre, as the best theatrical production of the year.

The composer and conductor Ivan Moody will provide a choral workshop on Orthodox chant. This workshop will introduce a number of strands of the rich and diverse traditions of Orthodox church music, including various kinds of monophonic chant (including Greek and Russian) and polyphonic choral music from such countries as Russia and Serbia. The music included will be presented as part of an open discussion of its history and context.

As an introduction to the rich orthodox choral tradition that the Sirin Choir will perform in Dundalk, a Choral Workshop will take place focusing on orthodox chant with conductor/ composer and orthodox priest Ivan Moody in Dundalk.

Ivan Moody, Ph.D (b.1964), studied music and theology at the Universities of London, Joensuu and York. He studied composition with Brian Dennis, Sir John Tavener and William Brooks. His music has been performed and broadcast all over the world, and recorded on labels such as Hyperion, ECM, Telarc, Warner Classics and Sony.
His largest works to date are Passion and Resurrection (recorded on Hyperion CDA 66999) and the Akathistos Hymn (recorded on Gothic Records CD 49210). Recent significant works include Ravenna Sanctus, written for Chanticleer (2006: recorded on Warner Classics R2 146364), Stabat Mater (2008), for choir and string quartet, written for the Oslo International
Festival of Church Music and Moons and Suns (2008), written for Ars Nova Copenhagen and the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet.
Recent commissions include Canti della Rosa for The King’s Singers, Canticum Canticorum IV for Seattle Pro Musica and the piano quintet Nocturne of Light for Paul Barnes and the Chiara Quartet. Current projects include works for the English Chamber Choir, the American ensemble In Mulieribus and the German group Singphoniker.
As a conductor he works regularly with a number of choirs and ensembles in both Europe and America, having paid special attention to Orthodox church music from Bulgaria, Finland and Serbia. As a musicologist he has written extensively on both early and contemporary music.
He is a priest of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, serving as rector of the Parish of St John the Russian in Estoril, Portugal, and is currently Chairman of the International Society for Orthodox Music.

that is happening on the 24th of this month in the National Concert Hall.
ICC New Works for Two Cellos performed by Ilse de Ziah and Lioba Petrie.

This month the Irish Composers’ Collective monthly concert series will be all about the Cello
– two cellos to be precise – performed by cellists Ilse de Ziah and Lioba Petrie.
As with all Irish Composers’ Collective events, de Ziah and Petrie will perform
new and previously unperformed works by member composers.
This month’s line-up of premieres includes work by Derek Foott, Marc Tweedie,
David O’Regan, Bryan Dunphy, Ben McHugh and Daniel Barkley and
the concert will take place in the Kevin Barry Room of the National Concert Hall.

Ilse de Ziah has had a varied musical career, playing cello all over the world.
Her most recent work includes the Cork Opera House production of Dido and Aeneas,
the release of her CD and publishing of a book of Irish Airs for Solo Cello.
Ilse is also involved with the Australian contemporary music trio Ozmosis,
Scarlet String Quartet, and Baroque ensembles Retorika, and Beyond the Pale.
She is leader and tutor of the cello section of the Cork Symphony Orchestra
and has composed music for dance, theatre and film.

Lioba Petrie
Lioba Petrie is an active chamber musician and teacher.
Her interest in contemporary music began when she became a member of
the new music collective EAR (electro acoustic revue) with whom she performs regularly,
discovering fresh contemporary music and working closely with other composers.
In 2008 Lioba became a member of the Maconchy Project,
a celebration of the Irish composer Elizabeth Maconchy and two other female Irish composers:
Jane O’Leary and Linda Buckley.
Lioba is also a member of contemporary ensembles Somadrone and 3epkano
and has toured both nationally and internationally with the Limbik Theatre Company.

In particular, the Irish Composers' Collective strives to further the
professional development of their members at an early stage in their careers
and it has over 40 members from backgrounds as diverse as jazz, electronica and traditional music.
