Hangul Alphabet. (ja-mo-eum)
Unlike the Korean language, the Korean Alphabet is very easy to learn. Korean words are made up of syllable blocks. These blocks are made up of the alphabet letters.
Eg. 밀 instead of ㅁㅣ ㄹ The blocks are made up like one of the following. C = Consonant. V = Vowel. Code:
C C CV CV CV C
V V C CC V
C CC
Examples. 주 줌 가 감 칾 굶 If the vowel has a long horizontal line then the letters go from top to bottom. If the vowel has a long vertical line then the letters go from left to right. Double letters are more pronounced. eg. ㅅ = s ㅆ = ss. Consonants. ㄱ = k (ㄲ = kk) ㄴ = n ㄷ = t (ㄸ = tt) ㄹ = l ㅁ = m ㅂ = p (ㅃ = pp) ㅅ = s (ㅆ = ss) ㅇ = ng (if the first letter in the syllable then it is silent) ㅈ = c (ㅉ = cc) ㅊ = ch ㅋ = k ㅌ = t ㅍ = p (b) ㅎ = h Vowels. Vowels are generally preceeded with a ㅇ as vowels can never be the first character. 아 = a 야 = ya 애 = ae 얘 = yae 어 = aw 여 = yaw 에 = e 예 = ye 오 = o 요 = yo 우 = u 유 = yu 이 = i 으 = eu 와 = wa 왜= why 외 = we 웨 = wei 워 = wo 위 = wi 의 = oi Last edited by Hobbes; 11-09-2004 at 18:11. |
