HMV dvd sales

Any1 else notice that anytime HMV run any of their buy one get one free sales the dvd prices mysteriously go up. For example were you to buy any of the father ted dvds before the sale you would have been charged 14.99, but now in the sale to purchase one of the dvds it'll cost you 24.99. I know that you are getting 2 dvds for 24.99 now, saving a fiver but the sale is very misleading. Hardly as appealing as the buy one get one free offer initially sounds.

If you are sure of those facts, then afaik you might be able to make a complaint about them. In order for an item to be offered at a 'sale price' then it has to have been at a higher price for a certain period of time before the sale (I think it is four weeks).

Of course, this is not a *sale* as much as a promotion, and as you point out the item is effectively cheaper (though you are asked to spend an extra €10 to avail of it).

Sharp practice if it is true.

That kind of practice doesn't surprise me in the least and the office of consumer affairs or whoever deals with such things should be notified. However, it just shows that when we see 'SALE' or 'SPECIAL OFFER', regardless of the price, we buy as many as we can because it's the old psycological thing of obtaining a bargain!!

- don;t know if any of you saw it but a few months ago there was an e-mail flying around which had been written by a girl who compared HMV's 'buy one get one free' sale to regular prices in other major chain stores in Dublin and London in great detail.
Needless to say HMV's sale prices were a sham - she sent the mail to HMV's boss, the consumers association, Mary Harney and a heap of other politicians. The most damaging aspect of it all tho was the fact that it got fwded around so much.

- the record shops are getting away with blue murder over here and the UK cos broadband hasn't taken off yet on the same scale as the US. I spent most of this year over there, and CD sales are down over 30%. As a result, prices have come down big time - you can pick up most albums for $15 or less - thats 12.50Euro. Meantime I've just paid 23 Euro for an album(it wasn't on cdwow or amazon), and thousands more will do the same before xmas. Even minus the VAT thats over 19 Euro a pop. I have no problem paying for music in principle but I won't allow myself to get repeatedly shafted to line Tower's and HMV's pockets, so I avoid them unless absolutely neccessary

I have attached the zipped .doc and .xls file that this girl made if anyone wants to have a look at in.
Bear in mind that the prices are a few months old but you get the picture.

Oneof the funny things about it all is if you go across the road to Game who are running a 3 for 30 dvd sale at the moment, some of the same dvds are in both offers. For example think Spiderman sells at 28.99 as part of HMV's buy one get one free sale, but its 14.99 in Game and part of the 3 for 30. What makes it funnier is hat the dvd has fallen in price as part of Game's sale. It was 23.99 I think before the sale and has now dropped 8 euro as part of it. 28 days later and my big fat greek wedding were 2 others I noticed which had fallen in price and were included in Game's sale.

i used to work in a music shop near where i live, music city, now this is no trade secret but every year there are "sales" and everywhere its the same cd's and dvd's for sale, these are called "loss leaders" e.g. tom waits albums, bob dylan and so on

now i left to concentrate on college, but every year since i left these sales start up again, same albums..... however the price does go up, it used to be 7 punts now i think i saw them in golden discs for like 15 eurobucks

shameful... i dont mind paying for music either but ill only pay a reasonable price
