I agree - on many counts...
Limerick's Riverfest last weekend being a good example on the 2 points I'd like to make. For the event, insurance on 2X half pipe/spine jobbie, 2 other quarter pipes and several ramps/tabletop thingys for skate, MTB & BMX in Arthuar's Quay park was covered by local council. True, it's first of what is expected to be an annual thing but shows that insurance is no real reason. Second point is in the organisation of clubs (and general organisation). I couldn't understand how some skaters, on being told that they could get sorted for entry for 5 euro (for juniors), refused - asking "why should we have to pay to skate?" (all seniors were paying 25 and getting a copy of freeflow magazine, a quality tshirt and a bottle of Club energiser - also included was a rider's pass for entry to the nightclub on Sunday which doubled as a ticket for a free pint - obviously, this couldn't be offered to juniors) While I take their point - I can't understand how the opportunity to skate what was provided was turned down. An event like Riverfest is an opportunity to show to councilors (who were everywhere) how important skating is to skaters. 5 euro is a small price to pay to not only get a point across but to ride some stuff that you may not alternatively get to access that often.... I don't know if it's indicative of the skating community as a whole but, as part of another sporting community (kayaking) it didn't seem to me to be a very productive attitude.... Quote:

As far as insurance goes the problem is us. You only have to get a splinter these days and we're phoning up one of those 'no win, no fee' companies. I agree and it seems rediculous that its ever been otherwise, but people who use the parks shouldnt be able to sue the owners if they fall off. An accident is an accident!

one day last year i was walking thru bushy park and i couldnt believe before my eyes i seen a skatepark. later on a few months down the road i was on a bus through blanchardstown, (th 39) and atop the bus i could look down on a really nice well built concrete skatepark. then i moved to dunboyne out in meath and couldnt believe that down the road from me layed yet another skatepark, (covered with knackers of course) i was still amazed! i was born in australia and skateparks where seen just as much as hurley feilds here.
i think its great that skateparks are propping up everywhere now! wow! how the hell did this happen? also id like to organise some sort of festival thats based in a park that will have a stage n stuff with skaters duin there thing, have a good atmosphere n all |
