I had the lower power berlingo. ****e on motorways. And bad mpg

Father has the mazda3 1.6hdi the higher power one. He cant get as good mpg as a vectra 2l sport the company car. He thinks its because its so turbocharged that its twitchy power and cant settle at a speed.

    Hi!

I'm not sure if I am posting in the right place but I'm going to be taking on a long commute to work on an hour each way (mainly motorway), so I am looking into getting a new Diesel car with low mileage that will be reliable and easy on fuel! I'm pretty clueless in the area of cars but have been advised to stick with a 1.4 to 1.6 litre. Would this be right? I'm also wondering whether anyone has advice on the type of car to go for? I'm currently looking at Golfs, Ford Focuses, Auris's and also quite like Honda Civics. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Feeling in the dark and overwhlemed at the cost! Thanks all!

With the amount of miles you are doing , I'd consider a high mileage car for a lot less, the logic being that any car you buy and put up 50 k per annum , it will knock the stuffing out of its resale value. Because any car you buy will be a high mileage car very quickly.
I'd recommend a 6 k Prius, and put on gas L PG , I'm told it works out at 130 mpg cost equivalent in Ireland, and I know for a fact Prius need feck all maintenance.

And before anybody says otherwise I'd have no problem sitting in a Prius for two hours a day on a motorway especially if it had cruise control.

    100 mph average!

Meant kilometers per hour! The drive is all motorway so 100 km in an hour is generous enough for a 120 km zone

Would going for a Prius not mean sticking with petrol though and I'd rarely be moving into the eletricity part as I wouldn't be using the electricity part? I like the idea of going for soemthing cheaper though as I'm very aware that I will be significantly diminishing the resale value very quickly!

    No.

And sticking with petrol has lots of maintenance advantages

Mad lad here did long motorway commuting in his Prius very successfully

Looking for something similar myself and have settled on a 2009-2010 Honda Accord 2.2 diesel. Something like this, VRT is around €3400. Should get 50mpg+ http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Honda/Accord/details-598293-Honda-Accord.asp?viewtype=0

Have the Dtec 2.2 in the family, its a struggle to get 45mpg. Normal driving with liberal right boot is 40mpg. Great car but likes the daysul.

as you are looking at emission based cars, I wouldnt be as concerned about the size engine within reason, excellent point about the mileage, the mileage you are putting on will decimate the value, how long do you intend on keeping it?

Those are some of the bm 3 series that appear to be good value to me... from a dealer, you would get better value going private though. These cars can have issues with the timing chain though, so be warned. We ruled out new "city cars" I take it you want something recentish too, the cost to tax these 2 litres for a year is E190 if they are the efficient dynamic ones, hence why your actually better going for a decent sized engine...
