I just really hope they toe the line between cheap hard and challenging hard. Its From so I trust em, but one article I read mentioning at least one stealth death is ever so slight cause for concern.

Hmmm, I don't like the sound of that. One of the things I respected so much about Demon's Souls was that it was never cheap. When I died it was my fault... curiously testing out that first red-eyed knight (dead), not paying 100% attention (often dead), pushing my luck a little bit too far (dead again). The game taught you to become a better player. I hope Dark Souls is equally fair.

    Totally agree.

Even when I felt cheated - arbitrarily fall off the wooden structures in 5-1, the Maneater whipping you off the bridge, the horrible slog of 5-2 etc. I still felt compelled to play again as the game is so rewarding. Levelling up makes a difference, each new piece of kit can make a difference, getting around the next corner can feel like an achievement.

Hence I'm not too worried if there are a few cheap deaths in there. I've read (in EDGE's preview) that the new traps are particularly nasty for instance.

Decided to buy this off gamestop too. First game i've ever pre ordered and 40 euro is a decent price.

Can't wait for it. Also can't believe the they are throwing man eaters at us early on! The amount of times they killed me was ridiculous!

This is honest to god shaping up to be one of if not the greatest game of all time for me, I absolutely loved Demon Soul's my fav game of this gen but i've been following everything to do with Dark Souls closely and it absolutely goes above and beyond everything in ways I couldn't have imagined!!

For anyone looking for lots of info on it the gamefaqs board is a hoarde of info at the moment, it's huge so there's alot of posts to get through but as I said some great info and vids in there.

    http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/606312-dark-souls

In short this is a much bigger, harder, deeper game then DS ever was and the new online content is honestly fantastic, nothing like it has ever been done before.

    Roll on the 7th!! :D

What from software are doing to those who get the game early is genius , thats the way to combat piracy to me anyways.. I cant wait for this , i didnt find demons souls hard , only question i have if anyone can tell me is the save file locked ?, cause in demons souls it was and when my ps3 hard drive got corrupted i couldnt put the save file on a memory stick.

Im glad this went multiplat , now everyone gets a chance to play this masterpiece .. Happy hunting :D

He's been playing solid about 16 hours a day since he had it streaming the whole time, think he said he started playing about 2 weeks ago!!

So what are the chances of Gamestop getting the game delivered early? Would bloody love a long weekend of Dark Souls to utterly crush my spirit.

5 Reasons why Darks Souls will be better than Skyrim...

Wont turn me off Skyrim, but I'm now going to be buying both games!

That article was written by someone who hated Oblivion, and so assumes that Skyrim will suck just as much. I'm buying both, and am super hyped for both, but the points he makes are mostly stupid...mostly.

    1. Multiplayer - No multiplayer isnt a point against Skyrim. It's designed as a single player rpg, and it always has been. Tacking on a multiplayer is a stupid idea. I love the online aspects of Demons Souls (sometime:P), but i don't think it's fair to compare them in that way. Not every game needs multiplayer.

    2. DLC - I can;t really argue too much with this part, but if the DLC is good and well designed, then i'll happily pay for it. Fallout had some excellent DLC.

    3. Epic Scope - This really reeked of 'Oblivion was ****, so Skyrim will be ****." I've no idea how big Dark Souls is, but Skyrim has plenty of epic scope. And it's not large amounts of empty land. There's loads to do.

    4. Combat - Yeah, Dark Souls wins here :)

    5. Dragons - I'm not even going to bother with this one.

Either way, they both look fantastic, and i can't bloody wait. So glad there's a month in between releases. Plenty of time for both.

There's previewers giving out about a buy in the game that buffers attacks. Basically you sometimes press attack and it won't come out until you perform another action like blocking where the character will perform the attack and then block. It's really annoying a few people. Hope it gets patched out on release.

Been watching a few streams and its looking really really good. Im super hyped for this game. I never bothered after the first few times to let myself be summoned to another persons game in Demon Souls. It seemed pointless as i would rather play in soul form just so i could control world tendancies better, so im glad they are taking it out and replacing it with "Humanity" which is actually useful. A the vagrant system looks really interesting which may turn out to produce some of the hardest enemys in the game.

Gonna try to make a Paladin type build in my first run through on Dark Souls. Melee orientated build with heavy armour and faith spells. What about you guys? Any ideas for how your gonna build your characters?

It's very hard to call right now as the stats now have added effects at a certain point (seems to be 30). Like dex gives a faster roll mechanic, it's actually a flip and looks pretty cool and str gives a faster attack speed for all weapons. No info on faith or int as of yet so it changes things a bit.

My fav DS build was a DEX katana set up however for my first playthrough im gonna probably focus on VIT + END for a high hp and stam pool and then decide on STR / DEX later once I know more about weapon scaling and stats.

Ideally I'd like to find a magic based weapon that doesen't rely on stats for scaling damage like Dragon weapon in DS so I can rely on it until I decide to level another stat once VIT + END are 40.

However heals this time around are actually very good to have as you have a limit amount of hp regen with the etus flask so I may have to give faith a think over!

Depends on if the bows are good again, if so i'll go for my dex\mag build again, never really bothered with armour always found rolling more effective, so if dex increases your roll i'll go for it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭penev10

I had a "Spellsword" build and a Faith Melee one in Demon's Souls. I like to keep my options open a bit as far as character building goes. I know it's better to specialise if you fancy PvP but I've found keeping a balance between ranged and melee works for me.

Bows are improved it seems, you can equip 2 types of projectile or arrows and change on the fly with L2/R2, also there's massive rare bows that fire spear sized arrows!! :pac:

Will probably go Spellsword type myself. Magic and melee, the best of both worlds.

Yeh, in demon souls I had a sort of mix between magic and melee. I used the crescent uchinchanga and wore light armour then depended on dodging attacks rather than blocking. I think this time round I'm going to make sure I have enough dexterity to wield a decent bow though. If magic is more limited, having some sort of range will defo help.

Anyone seen anywhere thats selling it cheap? I have it order from Amazon, but can do without the special edition if its cheaper than €45 anywhere in bricks and mortar?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,932 ✭✭✭YouSavedMyLife

Being able to roll in Demons Souls was considered by many to be better than heavy armour and slow rolling, but apparently From Soft have made using heavy armour a viable option. How, im not to clear on but from streams and forums it does seem to be viable. There is now 3 roll types compared to Demon's slow and fast, and rolling in Dark Souls has alot less Invinciblity-frames when compared with Demon's

Armour was viable up until NG+, after that forget about it plus you could bump into somoeone with acid cloud and it'd end up costing you 20K souls to fix the armour. Used love doing the acid cloud thing to guys with the brushwood armour set.

I got it for 38.45 plus 2 quid P&P at Gamestop.

As tempted as i would be to watch that, i think it would spoil a lot of the game. Getting roasted by that Dragon on the bridge was a learning experience, and i'd be a lesser person if i knew it was coming :P

I have this game on pre-order from Amazon. It was a spur of the moment decision. It is the special edition that was going for a great price. I never played Demons Souls but after hearing all the talk I was interested in seeing what it was like.

Tonight I watched the quicklook over on GiantBomb. I'm not sure I'm going to like this game but I am certainly excited to at least try it out.
