are travellers seriously considered a different ethnic group by some people? different culture yes, ethnicity I think not.

In Northern Ireland and the UK travellers are considered an ethnic group, in the Republic of Ireland they aren't.

Why didn't the priest perform the last rites instead of doing the wedding and the sacrament of sick.

    Thought that myself actually.

Depends what you mean by 'ethnicity'.. they don't need to be a different color or speak a different language to be considered an ethnic group of their own.
ethnicity is a socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural or national experience

And according to researchers they are
THE first DNA analysis of the Travelling community has proven that it is a distinct ethnic minority who separated from the settled community between 1,000 and 2,000 years ago, experts have claimed.

According to genetics expert Jim Wilson from the University of Edinburgh, though it is clear Travellers diverged from the settled community, it is not clear why.

He said Travellers are a distinct genetic group as different from the settled Irish as Icelanders are from Norwegians.

I don't think they should be afforded any special rights as result but there ya go! They're likely to be recognised as a distinct ethnic group before the end of the year due to sustained pressure from the UN.
The Committee requested the State to ensure that the Roma and the Travellers were recognized as minority ethnic groups. This had been called for by various United Nations human rights treaty bodies. Those communities had lower life expectancy and higher suicide rates. The State party should take more proactive steps in addressing the existing situation.

I can see Martin Collins licking his lips already. Maybe they'll even have a few slash hook attack investigations quietly dropped on the grounds of 'cultural sensitivity'.

Seems obvious by the quotes attributed to the priest (about the family being anxious to get her married) that he was terrified to do otherwise.

What normal person wants to get involved in their lunatic, fcuking internecine bloodbaths?

You never can tell /Chuck Berry
It was a traveller wedding, and the old folks wished them well
You could see that John Pius did truly love the Beor
And now the young monsieur and madame have robbed the poor box,
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell

They furnished off an caravan with a bit of carpet
The hiace was crammed with carpets and TVs,
But when John Pius found gold, the little money comin' worked out well
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell

They had a hi-fi phono, boy, did they let it blast
Seven hundred little records, all Joe dolan and johnny Cash
But when the sun went down, the bare Knuckle boxing began
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell

They bought a souped-up Hiace, 'twas a cherry red '03,
They drove it down to Ratheen to celebrate the anniversary
It was there that John Pius was married to the lovely Beor
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell

"He said Travellers are a distinct genetic group as different from the settled Irish as Icelanders are from Norwegians.". I'd love to know how he came to that wild conclusion, given that Icelanders have Norwegian, Swedish Irish and British genes floating about and some even older oddball stuff. Even if Travellers separated 1000 years ago(and I'd like to see the hard science behind that claim), they wouldn't be as different. Narrower than the main population because of generations of intermarriage alright.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

In a nutshell, when a group of people close them self off from the outside & breed only with those amongst themselves, over time they will become genetically distinct.

But only because the rest of the population diversified & mixed its gene pool, not because they are different to begin with.

By the very loose definition of what constitutes and ethnic group, Trekies have better claim to minority status with their own form of dress, language, culture and customs. Of course I'd never grant them ethnic minorty status either, it would only encourage their sectarian feuding with the StarWars nutters.

Unlikely. Traveller culture frowns on sex outside marriage. Far fewer single mothers within their community compared to the rest of Ireland.

It's a disgusting way to think, these kids should be in school, not getting married. The bride will be destined to be a housewife and mother when she's just a kid herself. Some culture.

The Catholic Church have nothing to do with it, marriage is a state institution and the laws governing it and the age at which marriage are permissible are on the statute books not the mass epistle
