It looks like the weather has improved just in time for the Olympics. After experiencing a wash-out for most of the summer, the latest long-term forecasts indicate that the current hot spell will remain for Friday's opening ceremony although there is not huge optimism for a prolonged spell of good weather. Anyway we all know that long range forecasts are unreliable and there is still a small chance that even the opening ceremony will be rained and meteorologists are keeping an eye on a weather system that will be moving north of France next Thursday.
Either way, the Olympic Park is looking amazing:

South-Sudanese marathon runner Guor Marial has been granted permission to compete in the Olympic marathon on 12th of August. His country (South Sudan) gained independence from Sudan in 2011 but are not yet elligible to send athletes to the Olympics under their country's flag as they have yet to set up a National Olympic Committee. Nevertheless, Marial will be able to compete under the Olympic flag in London bringing the number to 4 athletes who will compete under the Olympic flag at this year's Games.

Been trawling through the Sunday Times Olympic guide and the lesser known sports to see if I can spot some value. All prices are PP, been leaving out any very short priced mentions

This is purely based on the Sunday Times opinions as I would be completely clueless on all these. If some of the more knowledgeable posters here fancy checking out the prices on all the various events then the link is http://www.paddypower.com/bet/2012-Olympics (click the 'view all events dropdown), most stuff is priced up

    Wrestling - Mens Freestyle 120Kg
Artur Taymazov (Uzbekistan) 5/1, won silver in 2000, and gold in 2004 and 2008, has also won 3 Asian games titles and 2 Asian Championships

Shooting - Mens 10m Air Rifle
Nicolo Campriani (Italy) 9/4. Was the first competitor from any sport to qualify for the London games when he won the worlds 2 years ago. Also mentioned Peter Sidi (Hungary) 11/1.

    Taekwondo - Womens 67Kg
Nur Tatar (Turkey) 6/1 European youth champion in 2008 and 2010 also won silver at seniot level in European championship 2010

    Archery - Womens Individual
Koreans have won gold at every olympics since 1984, apart from in Beijing where it went to a Chinese lady. So take your pick of BB Ki 4/1, SJ Lee 13/2, H Choi 10/1 (all Korea)

    Archery - Mens Individual
Im Dong-Hyun (Korea) 7/2 broke 2 world records in October.

    Volleyball - Mens
Russia 12/5. Bronze in Beijing and a series of top finishes in tournaments since, won the World Cup last year

    Modern Pentathlon - Mens
Andrey Moiseyev (Russia) 13/8. Going for a 3rd succesive olympic gold medal, 2nd in last years world championship

    Handball - Mens
France 2/1. Champions in Beijing and have not finished outside top four in 9 of the last 10 world championships

    Sailing - Womens RS:X
Zofia Noceti-Klepackca (Poland) 3/1. 2nd in the last 2 world championships but has won twice in Sail for Gold regettas in Weymouth which is the olympic course

    Sailing - Womens Laser Radial
Gintarre Scheidt (Lithuania) 4/1. Current world champion

One of my biggest ever bets was Darren Suthlerand to medal in 2008. Was 7/1 only needing to beat guy from Virgin islands (I think) and the venezuelan who had upset him int he previuos worlds. Lots of value in Olympic markets

Larisa Iordache (10/1) and Viktoria Komova (7/2) both have great chances of winning this. This is the one sport I am obsessed with and I've bet on them. Other events in this are too obvious to get any value from, but again here http://www.paddypower.com/bet/gymnastics/2012-womens-olympic-gymnastics?ev_oc_grp_ids=754052 Larisa Iordache at 9/2 is a good bet and same girl again http://www.paddypower.com/bet/gymnastics/2012-womens-olympic-gymnastics?ev_oc_grp_ids=754050 at 6/1 are all bets I've made.

Why all this fuss and nonsense about allowing or not athletes from new countries to compete under their country's flag? What proof do they need that a country exists? Do they not watch the six o'clock news?

I just noticed an Olympic thread.

Great atmosphere building in London. I spent the day on the Torch run yesterday, the crowds were enormous and last night I was at the first dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony.

If you have nothing better to do on Friday, tune in, I think it will be better than Beijing.

PP seem to be out of line on this market, according to oddschecker:
    http://www.oddschecker.com/olympics/gymnastics/womens/individual-all-around/winner

E.g. Yao Jinnan is 20/1 with PP, but 5 or 6 generally with the other bookies that have it priced. While Gabby Douglas is 15/8 vs 7/2 elsewhere.

This seems a bit unusual - what do you think?

I don't have a great understanding of bets I'm afraid, just using gymnastics knowledge. Yao Jinnan is not worth betting on, she can't win unless everyone else falls. Gabby Douglas IS a favourite, but always messes up, so that takes her out for me. Her scores have been hugely inflated in internal US comps- that's why she's so hyped now, but it won't happen in London. He Kexin is worth it for uneven bars if you can find her, she has the most difficult routine. PP DO seem a little behind the times..their beam doesn't have the two favourites in it, and their bars misses He Kexin as well. Team final is too close to call.

Jordyn Wieber odds look too optimistic..doesn't 11/10 6/5 5/6 all mean they think she's a sure thing? She isn't, she's the most solid of them all but 5 of the others have higher difficulty than her..which won't mean much if they fall, but it's still unlikely she can beat all of them. Not impossible though.

    Hi all,

This is a bit off-topic, but I was wondering if anyone was aware of somewhere in Dublin that's screening the Opening Ceremony on Friday.

Would love to watch it, but I don't have a tv, and my internet is a bit borked at the moment.

    Thanks!

Don't believe the hype - the Olympic Games really kick off on Wednesday, two days before the Opening Ceremony.

Great Britain v New Zealand in the Women's Football tournament in Cardiff live on BBC1, kick off at 4pm. Five other games to be played later on the same day at various venues across Britain.

The draw for men's and women's Olympic boxing tournaments will commence at 2pm on Friday. This will be hugely important in terms of how we can expect to perform and with a kind enough draw for our boxers then any of those 6 are capable of medalling.

An early embarrassment for the Games Organisers

The North Korean women's football team have walked off the pitch at Hampden Park in Glasgow after their images were shown on a screen beside a South Korean flag.

Kick-off was scheduled for 19:45 BST. The game started over an hour late.

North Korea are playing Colombia in the second of the Olympic matches being held at the ground.

Games organisers in London have apologised to North Korean officials for the mistake.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-18991619

Unfortunate for this to happen on day 1 (or before day 1, if you prefer). Hopefully it is an isolated incident. Time to recheck all flags and anthems again, I think!
