Copy DVD audio to CD....how?

I've googled this quite a bit but every solution I come across involves the use of multiple clunky shareware programs...surely, in this day and age, there has to be a straightforward way to get the audio from a DVD to a CD?

I have 2 DVDs...one a commercial concert DVD; the other a DVD I made using my hard-disk recorder from the TV.

I just want to listen to these things in my car....I have no intention of making copies for distribution or anything...

    Can anyone assist?

Oh...and if anyone knows an efficient way to get streaming audio files (.smil) onto an iPod....that would be appreciated too! These are not podcasts...
