It's a different matter entirely for the few remaining British colonies etc such as the Falklands, St. Helena, Bermuda etc which are self governing but under the general control of the UK. |

The Falkland Islands are Crown Dependencies like Gibraltar, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, who just overwhelmingly voted to remain a Crown Dependency. Last time I was there EVERYbody not only spoke English, but sounded remarkably like any English-speaker from the rural midlands of the UK.
The Isle of Man has Manx as a second language - read any IoM government document to see what it looks like - and the Channel Islands are also French-speaking to a certain degree. However, you've all missed out Canada, where, in spite of the efforts of my brethren in Québec, the population remains, for the most part, English-speaking. Sure, the numerous First Nations retain their own languages [none, however, are French-speaking], but the general lingua franca [sorry] is still English. As wildfowler94 pointed out, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa - many independent Commonwealth countries, AND the UK itself, are all English speakers, in spite of also having their own indigenous languages. tac |
