    The Greatest American Hero

‘The Greatest American Hero’ Reboot With Female Lead Gets Big ABC Commitment
EXCLUSIVE: A re-imagining of Steven J. Cannell’s 1981 cult classic The Greatest American Hero is flying back to development with a new creative team, a big new commitment and a big twist.

ABC has given a put pilot commitment to the half-hour single-camera project. In it, the unlikely (super)hero at the center — Ralph Hinkley (played by William Katt) in the original series — is Meera, an Indian-American woman. The Greatest American Hero comes from Fresh Off the Boat writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan’s Fierce Baby. 20th Century Fox TV, where Fierce Baby is based and Fruchbom recently signed an overall deal, will co-produce with ABC Studios.

Written by Fruchbom, the re-imagining of Greatest American Hero centers on Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland whose talents include tequila drinking, karaoke and not much else. Then some aliens entrust her with a super suit to protect the planet, and the world has never been in more unreliable hands.

    The Machine

Katee Sackoff & Lance Henriksen Join Syfy’s AI Pilot
Battlestar Galactica alumna Katee Sackhoff, Lance Henriksen (Aliens) and Jaeden Bettencourt (Hotel Transylvania 2) have joined the voice cast of Syfy’s artificial intelligence drama pilot The Machine.

Based on the 2013 cult film, The Machine is set in a world that is being transformed by the emergence of artificial intelligence. The project explores the epic conflict between man and technology through the lives and motivations of six interwoven characters – each of whom holds the key to humanity’s victory or its destruction.

The Machine’ AI Pilot Not Going Forward At Syfy
The decision took awhile — the pilot was cast back in February. I hear that is because there was an effort by Syfy brass to rework the pilot. I hear the recut pilot was better received but in the end came short of a series pickup.

That's a real shame. The movie was really good and it's a great concept if done right, would be nice to have some more potential stand-out sci-fi other than The Expanse.

    Nightflyers

Syfy Orders George R.R. Martin’s ‘Nightflyers’ to Pilot
he network revealed they were developing the novella as a series back in May. It was previously adapted into the 1987 film of the same name. Jeff Buhler wrote the adaptation for television. The story follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system in the hopes of contacting alien life. They travel aboard The Nightflyer – a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other, and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

“We are looking forward to diving deeper into George R.R. Martin’s chilling world of ‘Nightflyers,’” said Bill McGoldrick, executive vice president of scripted development for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “The script that Jeff delivered encapsulates this classic sci-fi horror story and adapts it to a platform where we can truly explore the depths of madness.”

From Universal Cable Productions, “Nightflyers” will be executive produced by Gene Klein, David Bartis, and Doug Liman of Hypnotic. Buhler will also executive produce along with Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films. Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions will also executive produce with Robert Jaffe producing.

Netflix is in talks to co-produce Nightflyers, a new series from the brain of George R.R. Martin
With Game of Thrones nearing its end, Martin’s name has become associated with not only long delays writing novels but also one of the biggest TV hits of all time. While HBO are thought to be considering potential spin-offs for the fantasy epic, others are eyeing up Martin’s other work for possible adaptation on the small screen.

One such work is Nightflyers, a supernatural thriller about a ragtag bunch of scientists aboard the titular ship, The Nightflyer, on a voyage to the edge of the solar system. Teaming up with a telepath, they hope to make contact with alien life, and things, naturally, go horribly wrong.

The original novella may provide less source material than A Song of Ice and Fire, but with a film already based on the book released in 1987, the potential for expansion on-screen is evident. Indeed, Syfy has already picked up the project as a pilot, but with Netflix now in negotiations with producer Universal Cable Productions, the show is looking to head straight to series. Deadline reports that expected terms will follow the usual formula for Netflix, which is increasingly co-producing projects so it can release them in all of its territories at a lower cost: the series will likely air on Syfy in the US, with Netflix releasing it internationally and getting the second window release on American soil.

Jeff Buhler has penned the pilot, with Dan Cerone (The Blacklist) set as showrunner for the series and Mike Cahill (I Origin, Another Earth) signed on to direct the episode. Nightflyers is executive produced by David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein of studio-based Hypnotic, Cerone, Buhler, Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films, and Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions. Robert Jaffe, who wrote the 80s film version, is on producing duties.

    Dave Allen At Peace

Aidan Gillen To Play Dave Allen For BBC with Northern Ireland Screen and RTE.
BBC Two has ordered Dave Allen At Peace, a dramatization of the life and career of the Irishman who was once considered Britain’s most controversial comedian. The biopic of the Dublin-born Allen will be produced by Darlow Smithson Productions and written by Stephen Russell (We’re Doomed: The Dad’s Army Story, Peaky Blinders). Covering Allen’s 40-year career, it will explore how his comedy genius was shaped by the tragic loss of his father, his brother — and his finger — and how he survived decades of the Roman Catholic Church’s wrath, death threats from the IRA and a ban by Irish and Australian TV. Also starring are Conleth Hill (Game Of Thrones), Tommy Tiernan (Father Ted) and Joanne Crawford (Line Of Duty). Shooting starts this month in Northern Ireland with Northern Ireland Screen and RTE as partners on the project.

    Watchmen

‘Watchmen’ Pilot From Damon Lindelof Ordered by HBO
HBO has ordered a pilot for “Watchmen,” the new drama series it is developing with “The Leftovers” creator Damon Lindelof.

The premium service has also committed to additional backup scripts for the series. HBO confirmed the pilot order and script commitment Wednesday, one day after Lindelof teased on Instagram that work had begun in the writers room on the project.

“Watchmen” is based on the landmark DC Comics miniseries of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The series, later collected as a graphic novel, was a serious-minded deconstruction of superhero comics loosely inspired by characters from the Charlton Comics library, which were owned by DC. Set in a universe in which the appearance of costumed heroes in the mid-20th Century had altered the course of history — leading to U.S. victory in Vietnam and a Nixon presidency that stretched into the mid-1980s — “Watchmen” followed a group of crimefighters investigating the murder of one of their own. In the process, those characters — including Doctor Manhattan, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and Rorschach — uncover a conspiracy with enormous implications.

On Tuesday, Lindelof posted a picture of a statue modeled after an image from the comics, and captioned the photo “Day One.” The statue appeared to be placed on a table in the middle of a writers room.

HBO had previously taken a crack at developing “Watchmen” as a series in 2014, but abandoned that effort. Lindelof, whose show “The Leftovers” ended its three-season run on HBO earlier this year, is starting from scratch with his take. Variety reported on HBO’s development plans for the project in June.

Armando Iannucci, creator of ‘Veep’ and ‘The Thick Of It’, is heading away from politics up into the stars with ‘Avenue 5’, a new comedy for US network HBO according to Deadline.

Not much is known about the series right now, other than it’s set in the future, and believed to mainly take place on a spaceship.

    First Wives

Paramount Network announced Monday that it’s developing a new half-hour series based on the 1996 film “First Wives Club.”
Tracy Oliver, who most recently co-wrote the screenplay for the adult comedy summer hit “Girls Trip” is attached to the project. She became the first African-American woman to write a movie that grossed over $100 million domestically.

The series will have roughly the same plot as the film, which starred Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn as a trio of recently-divorced women who seek revenge on their husbands, who left them for younger women. In the meantime, the group also bonds together and finds strength to move forward thanks to their sisterhood

Oliver teamed up with her frequent writing partner Kenya Barris to write “Girls Trip,” but she’s been a part of other recent properties. Barris and Oliver also wrote on “Barbershop: Next Cut.”

Other recent credits include the webseries “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” in which she also stars, ABC comedy “The Neighbors” and the Starz drama “Survivor’s Remorse.” She is currently adapting Nicola Yoon’s best-selling young adult novel “The Sun is Also a Star” for MGM and Warner Bros.

Karen Rosenfelt, who produced movies in the “Twilight” saga and “The Devil Wears Prada” will executive produce. Dana Tuinier, Vice President of development and original programming at Paramount Network and TV Land, will serve as the executive in charge of production.

    The Dublin Murders

BBC One Orders ‘The Dublin Murders’; Sarah Phelps Adapting Tana French Books
BBC One has given the greenlight to eight-part crime drama The Dublin Murders, based on Tana French’s award-winning series of mysteries. Sarah Phelps, who recently reimagined several Agatha Christie novels for the BBC, will adapt the first two books about the fictional Dublin Murder Squad. Euston Films and Veritas Entertainment Group optioned the rights in 2015 and have joined with Element Pictures to produce. Filming will start next year in Belfast and Dublin.

The Dublin Murders is drawn from French’s In The Woods and The Likeness. Blending psychological mystery and darkness, each novel is led by a different detective or detectives from the same Dublin squad. The first book centers on a duo investigating the murder of a 12-year-old girl; The Likeness is about a young female detective who goes undercover to solve a murder in an elite college town. The thruline is an intense emotional connection between cop and crime, underpinned by a disturbing tremor from another influence.
