Time for everybody to do a speedtest on their mobile service and post up the results between Sunday the 30th and Saturday the 5th of June.

One weekend test and one weekday at 8pm-9pm test each please.

    1. Go to http://www.speedtest.net/
    2. Hover the mouse over the gold star on top of Ireland on the map.
    3. Click on DUBLIN NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE.
    4. Click "copy forum link" when the test finishes
    5. Go to boards, new post in this thread, paste in the forum link job done. Appears like this graphic.

    830099488.png

( Note , if you are with three then say whether you are a NORMAL 3 customer or an NBS three customer)

I will look over this thread next week and will summarise the results for everybody. It may be an idea to do this every 6 months and see what the reality is.

    The carriers are

    1. Vodafone
    2. Three NBS
    3. Three Normal
    4. O2
    5. Meteor

If everybody does their two tests ( weekend and weekday everning at 8-9pm) we will get a good idea of whose network is best configured and least congested.

Another test worth doing is the one at http://www.pingtest.net/ latency and jitter test , again select Dublin as the test server .

Let the test finish , click "copy forum link" and paste it in here. See if you can beat this one in Africa

    From Kilcoole, Co.Wicklow
    On 3 MiFi Device

Pingtest just gives a firewall error on any server, will need to look at the firewall on Mifi.

Speed is faster than my DSL line (3mb).

I'm not sure what value of a self selected test known only to users of this forum is?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

The speed test week announcement is cross posted in the Mobile forum. All of the operators are allegedly upgrading to 14,4 this year and we will run the same tests again around christmas.

I don't see the value in either, I could drive into NBS areas's and give 5mb + results on a daily basis it proves nothing. There would be some use in a location based test as it would give people a good indication of what to expect.

Speaking as someone who suffered through vodafone's fixed line service all this thread is doing is proving that any midband is better than vodafone fixed line. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055738410

    Ah. That makes more sense.

If your line actually works (which is nothing to do with Vodafone), it will not degrade like 3G/HSPA.

For a decent line < 4km from exchange there is no comparison.

Vodafone, Limerick, about 1km from the mast with good LOS.

    831991226.png

Wow, that's pretty piss-poor. I only use this during working hours, and it's normally around 3Mbps.

Limerick server is a bit better.
    831995371.png

Pingtest is giving me nothing but packet loss errors, on all servers.
