EPG via internet connection?

I recently installed a Saorview and Free to Air Satellite combi receiver (Triax TSC114). Like all Free to Air Satellite receivers I've come across it has only "Now and Next" information for the Satellite channels. Though of course I can and do look up the TV schedules online, it's a nuisance not to have a full satellite EPG for setting up recordings in advance.

The box I have (and many more besides I'm sure) has an Ethernet port for "future services". Do you think it would be possible to receive the information for a satellite EPG via the internet if the manufacturer was to write new firmware? In this day and age it seems silly to have to live with "Now and Next" via my set top box when I can look 7 days ahead just by taking out my phone.

I've read (possibly cynical) speculation that the Ethernet port is included purely for tax reasons, but I hope this is not the case.

7 day epg over the internet on a Triax certified box ?

Absolutely not. You are lucky the box got past the boot sequence :)

If not on a Triax box, what combo box could I have purchased that would do it?

I've seen this from Technomate (http://www.satellitetv.ie/Saorview_Combo_Receiver/technomate_tm_6902_hd_t2) but it's rather a lot more to pay just for the 7-day EPG. I can't understand why all manufacturers don't do everything in their power to provide a full EPG.

Also, what are your thoughts on theoretically getting the EPG via ethernet?

No EPG will beat a proper internet guide. I've using Digiguide for over 10 years now and it's invaluable. Instead of 8 channels by 1.5 hours at a time on the sky EPG I have 55 channels by 6.5 hours at a time for 2-6 weeks ahead (and one month behind). It's completely customisable and updates every day. It costs £10.00 per annum.

This is my affiliate link .... you can try it free for a month

I've been using FreeGuide (http://www.artificialworlds.net/freeguide/Main/HomePage) which is similar if not as nice to look at, but hey it's free.

I bought the Triax unit because overall it's great and very easy to use for those less technical than you or I, but I've only since found out that some units such as the Technomate I mentioned can in fact show the 7 day EPG.

I just can't comprehend why in this day and age a 7 day EPG isn't standard on FTA Satellite.

If you get a genuine FreeSAT box it will have the guide. The recording boxes allow series link etc.

Very cheap second hand boxes around. You would need a totally seperate box for Saorview if you TV does not have it built in.
