Yes, great TV but hardly a Bargain Alert.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,466 ✭✭✭skinny90

That depends on your perception of value.
Personally i think its a great deal considering the panel quality + what your getting for the 799(tv warrenty and sound bar)

If your looking for something big and cheap this isnt for you, If you appreciate decent panels then id recommend this tv for the price.

well it is if you are buying it in a bricks n' mortar store here considering the lower spec non 3d KDL42W705 model are selling for:

Currys: €699, no sound bar, standard warranty
DID: €779, sound bar, standard warranty

although if you are buying the 50" version especially for the 3d its not the best.
    http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/kdl50w829b-201403023650.htm
Put another way, the Sony KDL-50W829 is first and foremost a 2D display, with 3D slapped on as an afterthought.

still gets a Highly Recommended conclusion though. Great tv for gaming.
I think the 42" panel is a different make from the 50" so might be better 3d, cant find a review though

Either way they are better 2D tellys than the lower spec ones, better warranty and freebie so in my book its a bargain alert. I'm considering getting 42w705 so would defo get this if it was available locally

A five year warranty is really attractive tbh, I have a Sony Bravia for 3 years now and the speakers were beginning to go on the blink recently till I got a sound system to go with it. I'm not sure what the life span of modern tvs is but I'd hope to get more than 5 years out of it. A warranty of that length would give good peace of mind vs. the standard 12 month one...TV's are not a minor purchase so the companies really should be offering a 3 year warranty as standard, not doing so kinda says their confidence in their own products to continue working faultlessly only stretches to one year. That's just not good enough for a product that costs upwards of €500 and often over €1,000

given that the 50" is approx 1100 on richer sounds, and harvey norman have the soundbar at 209, then 930 for both + the warranty does sound very good...

Yes that is it, KDL829 is 400hz, more details:

I bought this tv 2 weeks ago for €800 locally which was the cheapest I could find it at the time so €700 plus a free sound bar is good value. Great TV by the way with a very good picture, this model was only launched less than 2 months ago.

I must be missing something.. the 50" is coming up at 1099 for me on the website. http://www.sony.ie/buy/w800b-series?sku=KDL50W815BSU

If your after a 42 inch and it's going to be used for some gaming which I reckon it is, try and hunt down a Panasonic TX-P42GT60B or even a bigger one if your budget is bigger, there's no comparison in the picture quality, if your being advised the sony has a great picture that person doesn't know what a great picture is. I've yet to see and lcd/led screen to pull off black and white.

I'd try richer sounds here on boards for one http://www.boards.ie/ttforum/1105

if you feel like taking a punt on a used TV nothing will come anywhere near this TV http://www.adverts.ie/tv/pioneer-kuro-pasma-pdp-lx6090/4924319 Review (if he'd part with it for 799 i'd take the hand off him.;) , it's worth keeping an eye out as every month or two a kuro usually surfaces and sometimes for a bargain price. (look out for Kuro 5090, 6090, 500a or 600a).

Its the 5 year full warranty that seals the deal for me, i got a sony tv about 2 years ago when they were offering it last time around.

The 5 year warranty is worth more than anything these days, as all the manufacturers are in a race to the bottom and unfortunately its the longevity of the components that seems to be suffering.

Strongly considering it. I have a 42 inch from 2007. This TV would be far more energy efficient - would it save me 180 euro every in electricity year for the next 5? I think it would.

And a 5 year warranty and a sound bar? Nice.

bought the KDL50w829B from power city the other day for 1060 including the sound bar so i am quite jealous of the 930 quoted above (if legit)

    didnt win a PS4 :(

extended warranty is a mail in redemption so ask for the form in store if buying

    some notes:
it is not vesa compatible without an adapter like this : http:// www av4home.co.uk/sony-w6-7-8-bolt-kit.html#prodTop
it has an external PSU which some shops dont mention (or deny) so keep this in mind if wall mounting

    fwiw,
i think it looks great, im not a light/contrast/coulor measurement device tho so i may be wrong

We've last year's 42w805a and a 47w805a. I can't imagine they've got worse. Their one weakness is black levels could be better. As gaming tvs they're hard to beat, they outperform the more expensive w9 panels and are excellent tvs in general. I spent a lot of time researching these and I'm really happy with them. Again, that's last year's model.

They are using different panels for 2014 range

KDL50W829 comes with AMVA5 - T500HVF04-0 - 100hz panel, which is excellent for black levels....

Did ye get the 42" or 50". From reading over on AV forums the 42" doesnt have the Motionflow controls that the 50" have (mainly for watching sports)

Cant find any reviews for any 2014 Panasonic tvs so would risk it myself yet even though pannys are amongst the best ye can get.

One worrying thing about going for a Sony is there is strong speculation that Sony are going to announce their exit from the TV business in the next week or so :(
Dont know what that would mean for the 5 year warranty...but still only speculation.

    Model on sony.ie is KDL-50W815B

Model in power city etc is KDL-50W829B

Anyone know what the difference is?

both €1099 online for the 50".

I'm sorely tempted, especially if it can be got for €930 in store.
