Relocating to Athlone

    Hi All,

So I've just got a job in Athlone. I'll be moving from Dublin in August. Don't know anything about the place really so just lookng for some feedback:

    1) Looking for house share close to the town, but I want to stay away from student type areas
    2) I'm 22, but will be staying in Athlone for the foreseeable, so want to get to know people/join clubs etc quite early on - but I'm fairly shy. Can anyone recommend a gym/fitness classes and maybe a local ladies soccer club?
    3) Good GP recommendations in the town centre? And also physiotherapists?

    Thanks!

TimHorton, do not post in this thread again. It was needlessly aggressive, and not at all helpful to the OP.

What part of town will you be working in? Will you drive to work, or are you going to be on foot? Weird question but it might narrow down your accommodation choices.

Stay away from Willow park, or anything with "Batteries" in the address :-)
Plenty of clubs and gyms. Most of the hotels have gyms, plus the RSC (Regional Sports Centre) has been recently renovated.

Also, plenty of physios around too. The Irish rugby teams physio is based in Athlone, but could be a queue to get to see him!

As mentioned above, where you work is important in relation to where you might live. As for house-shares, the bigger companies have noticeboards advertising stuff like that.
For a GP, I'd recommend the Town Centre Surgery (it's at the big shopping centre).
There are pick-up fitness classes held either at the Regional Sports Centre or the GAA on Ballymahon Rd. Here's the timetable:

Depends on where you will be working and whether you have your own transport or not. Monksland has a bus to and from town on the hour, every hour. In the area, there is a decent Supermarket and a GP surgery. There a few gyms in the area, Peak Physique being the cheapest, if you only want to use the equipment and nothing else.

The area itself is some what quiet and while most of the town is expensive to rent in, Monksland has some decent accommodation, having been built in the last 5 - 10 years. Don't really know how to advise you until we have more information on where you'll be working, your transport situation and what living arrangements you're hoping to find.

I agree about Willow Park but your comment about The Batteries is a very unfair generalisation....

I will be working in Athlone town centre, but I have a carso willing to travel.

I suppose what I'm really looking for is somewhere with some sort of community feel, or at least somewhere that's easy enough to meet people. I will be the youngest in my new job, by about 20 years, so I don't see myself making great friends here. Accommodation wise I'm not overly fussy though, I don't mind if it's an apartment/house etc.

Thanks for all the help re: gyms and physio though... I didn't realise there would be so much choice so that's great!

I lived in silver quay apts beside the radisson hotel. There's parking for your car. Location is great and there are reduced rates for residents in the gym downstairs in the hotel.

I disagree, but it is up to the OP to decide

Working in town, and having a car leaves all manner of possibilities open for accommodation.

It's up to the OP really where they fancy. If it was me, I'd plump for Monksland, or an apartment in town (somewhere on West side or City Quarter)

All opinions welcome - good or bad! :D

Thanks everyone, guess it's just a case of looking at a few places so if Athlone town is as accessible as it seems.

Thanks Roosterman71! I've seen a few places on daft.ie and rent.ie, I just wasn't sure about location wise... have a much better handle on it now thanks to everyone here.

Cena, it's a small accounting practice in the town, there's only about 5 people there at the moment and they are all 40+ - I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this or that I won't get on with them, but it would be nice to meet some people my own age for socialising :)

Probably the pub is where you well meet people. not a place I would go to meet friends. gym or gaa would be good.

Depends entirely on what the OP is into. There's more than plenty sports clubs around the town, along side an array of other social groups I'm sure. Besides work and the odd weekend away, I don't get around town all that much. Too tired in the evenings to be ársed :P

I generally wouldn't go to a pub on my own... I'd be interested in sports clubs and that so I might make some friends that way :)

There is an inline hockey club in Athlone. Came across it on facebook

Thanks Cena, that's really helpful, I actually play hockey so I'd be really interested. I'll check it out, thanks

A social tag rugby league runs for the summer, there are often teams that are short a few people and will take spares. Good way to meet people

Lookup bucaneers tag rugby on facebook, it next to & in a bar called the bounty

If you are interested in Inline Hockey, we play Mondays and Wednesdays from 8.30 in Drum Community Centre
