    Hello all :)

Hope everyone's well. Myself and my Girlfriend are trying to strengthen our relationship.
We have recently been having a lot of problems.

I would like us to spend some more time together doing things such as playing games or doing activities. We have a baby .. under 1 year old so we only have a couple of hours in the evening where we can spend time together.

So anybody out there with suggestions of how we can spend quality time together.. preferably in the house... bar the obvious one!:P

    Thanks all

That is such a lovely idea. Do you like board games, like Scrabble or Monopoly, or card games? What about looking into crafts that you both like, like pottery, mosaic, or (mine and my boyfriend's personal favourite) upcycling. You can find some old tatty piece of furniture and repaint or re- upholster it together.

Jenga, which is cheap and cheerful, connect 4.

i would say personally, I am very competitive and games bring that out so would not be the best thing for helping me get on with someone. If either of you are like that then an activity might be a better idea, cook, jigsaws, things where helping each other gets the objective met rather than working against each other - if that makes sense.

Hi thanks for the reply.. Yes i like bored games but monopoly is a bit too tedious and scrabble is out as english isnt her first language :/ so its a bit unfair, craft wise we might be able to find something but we are not very artistic...the up cycling sounds like fun doh! :)

It isn't about being artistic at all, it is about having fun together. Myself and my boyfriend might buy a table for a tenner at a boot sale (daytime activity), then we might pick colours together, sand the table, put masking tape on it, then he paints it (as I am less than nimble with a paintbrush!). It could take a week with a few coats of paint. You could even stencil things onto your child's furniture. Check out upcycling ideas online!

I'd agree with the poster who said jigsaws, maybe even some of those 3D jigsaw would be great fun to work on together.

How about playing Sporcle quizzes online together, one typing and both working together? There is such a huge range of categories, ye would surely find some that interest you. They are also educational (some of them!) or just good fun!

Mr. Merkin and I love a game of Scrabble on occasion (it's great on the iPad if you have one) and backgammon is also a really brilliant game as it's something that becomes really strategic (and competitive!!) once you have learned to play and practice. In fact I think everyone should know how to play!

Cooking together is also a lovely thing to do. Maybe you can set aside one evening a week and have a cook off. Maybe make sushi together which is quite creative or try a new dish that you can both get involved in. It's relaxing and fun.

Lego is good too - they have great adult stuff on their website like cars, spaceships etc. the only issue is adult lego is harder to find on the website so you almos have to google adult lego, and go from there. Friends got a Volkswagen can lego kit a while ago but to find it you have to search on the website in the search box.

You work as a team to find the pieces. Jig saws also fun.

Are you based in Dublin? There is a good board game shop on jervis st where you could get some two player games

Lots more board games available than just the traditional ones you find in toy shops, try the Tabletop and Board Games Forum for some good ideas.

Me and my boyfriend love strategy type card, dice and board games. Plenty you can get is a specialist shop or online, card and dice ones are generally pretty cheap too. My dream is to have a spare table big enough for jigsaws in our house :D

Good weather in the evenings too now for a nice walk together with the baby?

    Some of my favorite games:

Munchkin - A silly card game that has lots of humor and has fantastic illustrations on the cards. I personally prefer this one with only 2 players, I find more players a bit tedious. It comes in a bunch of different versions that pretty much just vary by theme and jokes.

Smallworld - never played it with 2 myself but it has a map specifically for 2 players so should be just as fun. It's a strategy board game, seems daunting at first because there are lots of bits but the rules are actually fairly straight forwards, plays kind of like Risk.

Hanabi - The best description I've heard is reverse poker solitaire. It's a co-op game so would be ideal for a couple, can be played with just 2 players and it has some extra pieces to up the difficulty if it's a bit easy with only 2. Definitely one of the most elegant games I've ever played. Doesn't come with many parts and the rules are easy, but the instructions come in German so you'll probably have to look them up online.

Catan - Another strategy game similar to risk, much simpler than Smallworld, potentially a little dull with only 2 players but can be fun. I've only just discovered that they released a 2 player version called Rivals for Catan, so that might be worth a look.

A post over in the boardgames forum will probably get you lots more suggestions.

I'm a big fan of card games, like Speed (also known as Spit) which is a great 2 player game.

Myself and my gf love playing guitar hero, if you have a games console it's a cracker and tons of fun. You don't have to be a gamer at all to give it a go.

Some great ideas on this, I'm going to jot them down for my house!

We would play monopoly a bit, sometimes just the both of us and other times with the kids... Either way we always end up killing one another!

There is a games shop in Galway on Lower Dominic street that sells board games. There's much more variety than just scrabble or monopoly! I'm sure they'd be able to recommend some good games for two people.

+1 on Settlers of Catan, such a good game, I'm sure the two player version would be just as good as well.

I haven't the two player version, but it's a bit bad playing the full game with only two (although there's some suggested ways to do it) as it doesn't even out as well as it does with 3 or 4 and the person with the best initial spot always wins...

Me and the fella used to (got bored of it) play Project Gotham Racing and Forza on the xbox a lot. Kept us happy, and it's hilarious to start with if you're both useless. And then get more skilled. Keeps the reactions sharp :D

Now we play wordfeud, which is more age appropriate I suppose, but less sociable with each other unfortunately.
