Tullamore living

Hi guys

Im considering moving to Tullamore.

Where is nice to live thats close to the town?

Is the train service reliable as I will commute daily. Would I be better off driving I generally work in Dublin but from time to time work in Galway, Cork and other cities around Ireland.

What is Tullamore town like? What kind of facilities are around? Droim Liath is the kind of area I have been looking into. Is there any housing estates walking distance from the town.

Hi,

its a great town. Depending on where you work in Dublin, the car might be necessary. But overall, the train is recommended. And good.

There's been one or two threads very similar to this in the Offaly forum. Worth digging a bit more using the search forum facility.

ps Dromliath is not a convenient walking distance to town, particularly later at night for, I presume, a young lady. I would recommend Spollenstown or Whitehall Estate etc. Much safer and shorter distance also. Perhaps Harbour Walk also.

Many thanks for this. I was down on Friday the town was very busy. I checked out a few areas and although many housing developments are walking distance some are a bit awkward location wise. Plenty of taxis though.

so many car parks in the town but yet nowhere to park it was crazy. The town is so busy I wasn't expecting that.

Still trying to decide if the daily commute to Dublin/Galway will be manageable.

i think tullamore is grand, not as busy as ages ago when i used to socialise here but since i moved back its so quiet, pubs are very quiet if you are lookign for abit of a night life. drom liath is ok same as ballin ri and carraig cluin, harbour walk, thornsbury are all walking distance especially if you want to leave car at home and walk to train its around 20-25 mins, main street for an apartment woudl be ideal but expensive. but its around the corner from train and in centre of town.

depending if its daily to galway/dublin then might be worth considering. why not just move to galway, its a class city.

Maybe Athlone would be a decent alternative if you can't find anything suitable? Its more or less halfway between Dublin and Galway, is on the train line, and its also motorway all the way to both cities if you wanted to drive. Its a good size town too, so there is plenty of accommodation available, and has good facilities, shopping, nightlife etc.

Not trying to hijack the Tullamore idea at all, my mother is from there and I like it, just another option!

I commuted from Tullamore to Athlone (Galway train) all last year and it was grand, only thing is I don't think there's a train earlier than half 8 from tullamore which means your arrival in Galway would be just after 10, thats not much good if u have work at 9..

Athlone might be better as you have the choice of two bus lines as well as the train.

If your mostly working in Dublin then Tullamore would be best as its only 60 mins by train, Athlone is 90 mins by train. Have a look at Spollenstown Wood, it is a nice housing estate built about 10 years ago and is a 5-10 minute walk to the train station and a 15 minute walk to the town center

Any of the above places would be ideal if you needed the train. Thornsbury, Harbour Walk, Harbour Drive Drom Laith and Ballin Ri are quite a distance from the train station. They price of rent on a 2 bedroom aprtment in Main St. has dropped considerably. You can get a 2 bed apartment near the shopping centre, train station etc. with your own parking spot for between 6 and 700 month. There is housing estates on the outskirts of town that are not overally far from the train station. As said above, Spollens Town, Charllivle and Clonminch wood. All nice places. There is a newish place built in that area in the last few years called Colliers Brook. Nice private place with a mixture of apartments and houses.

Hi there,

I am thinking of moving to Tullamore does anybody know of any safe/ quiet areas. We have no children so schools are not an issue also I dont drive.

I was looking at Cahir Mhor and Kearney Park/ road in front of the park does anyone know what they are like ?

Also, the town centre ?

The Granary Market oldish apartment block.
Alt moore apartment ground floor.
Kilbride Street.

We are not really familiar with the town so thought I would try check it out.

Cahir Mhor, (Nice quite area, close to train station)

kearney road, house (don't know where this is, there is no kearney road, if you mean Kearney Park then, older housing estate, quite area now and close to town centre)

The Granary Market oldish apartment block. (stay well clear of this spot, very noisy with all sorts living in this block, apartments are small and packed tightly together)

There is no evidence what so ever that this was a sectarian issue, this was more than likely young lads been vandals. If you read the article the Reverend doesn't believes it was sectarian.

In fact I can't remember the last time there was a sectarian attack in Tullamore, it's simply not an issue here what religion a person is

typical timid southern protestant response...of course it was sectarian on the lead up to remembrance sunday what else would it be..the same thing happened in galway way a few months back

Sounds like you have a southern protestant chip on your shoulder. I live in Tullamore and come from a protestant background and I tell you it is not a sectarian town. Those days are long gone.

I am moving to tullamore for work in the next few months and I am looking to buy a place. I am a single man so looking for a one or two bedroom apartment.

My budget would be 100K - 120K .

I have been looking at places on the Internet such as Altmore House and River Court and both look absolutely fine, location wise.

I am just wondering if any of these areas have a bad name?

Or if ye have any recommendations for another apartments to look into.

All advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope, these are nice apartments. Gated too. Right in the middle of town too.
I would have no problem living there

Very rarely hear anything bad happening in the area on the news

I would avoid Arden View estate but I don't think there is much hassle anywhere in general.

My wife and I are moving back to Ireland shortly from the UK. Her family lives close to Moate and we are looking at locations close to her. Tullamore is one location we are considering. Unfortunately, neither of us drive (the consequence of living in cities all our adult lives). In Tullamore the houses that are available within our (unfortunately) modest budget are either in places like Eiscyr which seems to be a 40min walk out of town, or in the centre of town. Can anyone comment on living in the centre of Tullamore, is it to be avoided?

I haven't heard anything particularly bad about Escir but there are not many amenities around that part of town. All the supermarkets are in the centre or other side of the town. I don't think there are any huge issues in the town, maybe somebody else can advise more.

Eiscir Meadows is about 15 min walk from the town centre, you have centra or circle k close by. No big issues with Èiscir or around town.
Don't be enticed to move into church hill.

It's more than 15 min walk. I don't mind Centra or Circle K but it's not where I would be buying my Sunday roast, more exotic ingredients and carrying home 7kg bag of potatoes from. It's not a convenient location if you don't drive that's all.

Check "daft.ie" there is a 2 bed apt for rent in Altmore (think they maybe all be 2 bed) or contact kelly/duncan auctioneers, they may be able to help you.
