Hi all,

Changing Arts Subjects

    Hi, I'm most likely going to be starting Arts in UCD this year and I was just wondering if its possible to change one of the subjects that I put down on the CAO. I put down Politics and Sociology as my subject options, but I realise know that I want to do English more than I want Politics and they're in the same group. Would it be hard to change?

    Hi I was looking at the course catalogue earlier and it says that you study 3/4 subjects in first year and I think you could probably change it after studying the 3 for the year?

    Hey bateve,

    You may not be able to kick Politics without going to the School of Arts and even then it could be tricky make the move as English is very popular. However, there is a way you might be able to get English in using electives (in case you cannot change out of politics).

    But first, the reason English and Politics are not available are due to timetable clashes.

    Second, to be able to continue with English into second year you will need to take and pass 2 core modules. These modules are called Literature in Context 1 (in Semester 1 Module Code ENG10050) and Lit in Context 2 (Semester 2 Modules Code 10060).

    These modules take place at 3pm on Wednesdays in each semester.

    Now here is the way you might get around it. When it comes to Politics modules, you have two core modules you'd have to take and that you will be assigned to automatically. One of these has a potential timetable clash with the english - Foundation of Political Theory & International Relations (INRL10010) - This takes place at 3 on Wednesday BUT ONLY in Semester 1. This is also offered in Semester 2 and if you switch it over, English should be clear for you.
