INTRA: How does it work?

So I am only going into second year but I have a few questions about INTRA.

Does the college place you or do you have to find placement yourself. If so how is placement dealt and what is the likelihood of going abroad?

Thanks

Well when I did it a few years ago it was a little like the portal page, you upload your detailed CV, basically fill out a form and then when DCU approve it you can access a page of offers. All you need to do is read what the job is and click apply if you are interested. I believe you can also sort your own intra, I'm sure they would love it actually because of trying to get everyone placed in this climate. I remember in my year a few people had no choice but to go to final year, there weren't enough places and they couldn't place themselves.

I actually managed to work in Boston for the year. I know one girl got placed in New York but we were the exception. I didn't hear of anyone else being placed abroad, not to say that there wasn't. I'm sure you could try organise it if you really wanted to. The US might be hard though with all the visa stuff you have to do.

Pretty much everything that was stated above. You upload your CV, you apply for the jobs you want, you get an interview if your lucky and they hire somebody.

If you get an interview, you have to go. If you get offered the job you have to take it. So don't apply for jobs you don't want. If you turn down an INTRA job, they kick you off their system and you have to get placement yourself.

However, if you dont get a job (in Engineering) they give you an unpaid 12 week project to do in DCU itself.

All jobs (in Engineering) are paid or the company must state they are paying less than minimum wage. This happened to me, when I got the contract it was €3 ish an hour. Went into INTRA and I didn't have to take the job, was put back on the system.

At the end, you have a pretty long report to do on how you got on.

I am currently working in a large multinational corporation on INTRA. Its a great few months. It runs through the summer (if your doing 6 month INTRA). If you are doing a year long, its September to May (I think).

Thanks for the insight guys! Was hoping for a higher chance of going abroad but maybe it'll still be reality for me!

Just a quick word on getting your own Intra placement, make sure the company are fully aware of it, and that what you are doing satisfies the criteria laid out by the course and INTRA office.

e.g. a 6 month intra doing accounting when you are a chemistry student

I saw about three intra jobs abroad this year . ( boston, Netherlands and Spain ) the Spanish one you had apply externally . There was a mention of another state side job. Of course these things depend on your choosen course.
