Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Candidate Posters outside Voting Stations Legal?

    I thought I had heard it was illegal for candidates to have posters right outside the polling station - that they had to be a certain distance away. Does anyone know whether it is true at all?

    True thinks it fifty metres but is ONLY relevant on the day of voting!

    Ah! That's interesting - a number of new posters, in particular a HUGE Seán Ó'Fearghail (FF) poster arrived either last night or today. Just to show I'm not biased the others are Clifford Reid (Ind) Jack Wall (Lab) and Martin Heydon (FG).....It'll be interesting to check whether they're there in the morning.

    A candidate in Cork North-West was canvassing in one of the polling stations today (Not the one in which he is registered to vote even)

    How illegal is that? Seems pretty illegal to me.. NOTEWORTHY even..

    Two FF posters on lampost right outside my station no more than 6 meters from the entrance. Dad worked in station in tallaght and named 8 candidates that were there 'visiting' during the day, he was chatting with all of them, some of them were voting some were not running in that area. :confused: Is this allowed?

    Mattie McGrath was hovering around a south tipp station, van parked outside an entrance with his face etc plastered across it. And I thought he'd finished vote sniffing when he left ff :rolleyes:

    posters were supposed to be a certain distance from polling stations, that is the law,

    What do you mean by canvasing? If he was actively telling voters to vote for him then yes. However many candidates visit stations and chat with polling clerks during the day to look like they are taking an interest. Asking about turnout, making sure opposing candidates signs aren't too near the polling station etc. It's allowed.

    Yes they are allowed to come in and chat. If the posters are too close to the polling station complain to the presiding officer and measures will be taken to have the poster removed.
