I liked Anarchist, but given a choice between Flying Dog's Raging Dog(4 euros), Norrebro Little Korkney Ale(4.50) or Anarchist(10 euros) it's never going to get bought again for me, especially when I think the other two beers are tastier.

It can be hard to find a nice session beer. A lot are at least 5% but for a session I'd like around the 3.8 - 4%
Yep was thinking the same thing.

Have had some nice hoppy beers on draught lately, Brewdog Punk/5AM Saint/Hardcore and I think Flying Dog's DIPA whatever that was called.

Picked myself up a bottle of Mikkeler Coffee IPA to add to my stock in prep for my first c-word in my own house. The collection is coming along rather nicely
    Which one? They have two

I had Mikkeller Koppi Tomahawk x Guji Natural Coffee IPA at the weekend, it was fantastic.
But, that's only what I experienced and I think it's a fine example of an IPA.
Hmmm. Confusing. I would have said its a pale ale, not an IPA.

St. Bernardus Pater 6. About to pour it... how exciting!

Working my way through the 4 pack case I got. One each night up to Thursday night after work :D.
Can't wait to get to the Abt 12. Hopefully this one is nice.

I disagree. With craft beer you have something for every occasion. Just about everything macro is 4.3-5%. The only macro I can think of below 4% is Smithwicks which is virtually tasteless.

I'm guessing some of the ABV's but some widely available session options are:

    Fyne Ales Jarl 3.8%
    Thornbridge White Swan 3.5%
    Whitewater Copperhead 3.8%
    Porterhouse TSB 3.X%
    Dungarvan Comeragh Challenger 3.8%

Not taking issue with your overall point, but it's a stretch to call Porterhouse TSB "widely available". It's cask only and is not even found in all of the Porterhouse pubs in Dublin.

Thwaites 'Nutty Black' is a low (3.8%?) ABV option which I've seen in a few places. Also JW Lees 'Brewer's Dark' is 2.8% and is in the Tesco 5 for €10 deal. I haven't tried either of these as yet.

    Tonight:

    Mission Brewery IPA
    Southern Tier Harvest Ale
    Southern Tier IPA
Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron <- This ones going to be epic

Local brewbar has launched its first brewed onsite beers, a golden ale and an IPA, ill pop in for a pint of each.
And my missus's place has a new one from Garage Project - Golden Brown on draught so ill pop in there first!

I should probably drink less beer, but **** it

Ooh, had this at a beer festival in London recently. I remember loving it, and it being pretty big, but don't have anything specific in my memory-banks. I'm quite jealous!

Well I didnt drink any of those bottles last night, so naturally, I bought some more.

I have a bottle of Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Black Rye IPA sitting on my desk here.

Currently drinking the St. Barnardus Abt 12, and it's a fabulous beer.
The taste is incredible and if I could afford it, it would be as a dessert after every meal.

Can't wait to try my Westvleteren beers I have when I receive them during the Christmas holidays. Although I've heard they taste similar to the Abt 12. I'm going to buy more Abt 12 tomorrow. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

    Aha yeah you're right :D.

It was so nice that it has me in the mood for some beer.
Now I'm drinking a Hilden Twisted Hop; which has a nice dry and hoppy character.

I've got my Flying Dog Double Dog chilling outside on the window sill now, as I'll have that after. It feels like I'm celebrating :P.

Might leave the Rochefort 10 until tomorrow after work, though.

Nice lineup. Think I prefer the Rochefort 8 myself.

I'll definitely pick one of these up tomorrow.
I'm surprised I can type ok. (although taking my time :P).

What beers would you recommended, reeb? What beers tickle your fancy that you don't have too often?

I havent been in Ireland in over a year, so its hard to know whats available distribution wise. Im on a hard US beer kick myself at the moment but practically none of the stuff im drinking is available at home.

What I would recommend is reading a few beer books to give you context for the beers you are drinking. For example, another poster dismissed Anchor Steam Beer as a bit ordinary (which flavour wise it probably is compared to the crazy brews about today), but when you put that beer in its proper historical craft beer context you enjoy it on a whole different level as a beer spearheaded an out and out revolution.

I read this one a while back

Oude Geuze Mariage Parfait was neat, although I haven't drank enough sours to really be able to differentiate it from Cantillon. Wish G(u)euezes were more affordable and available.

Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast was an excellent Imperial Stout. Not quite as mindblowing as Beer Geek Brunch Weasel but hey, not many beers are. Recommended especially for everyone who has the need to say "mikkeller sux" every time someone posts about drinking a beer of theirs ;)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 66 ✭✭reeb

Whered you pick up those two Mikellers?

  • Registered Users Posts: 972 ✭✭✭snowblind

The Breakfast I picked up in Redmonds, was the last one on the shelf but I've seen it in Drinkstore too. Unfortunately the Brunch one I got from London - if I had regular access to it, I would, weekly.

Geuze is very affordable and available in The Abbot's - if you happen to live in Cork. They have a wide range of lambics at very reasonable prices.

How much would a bottle of Cantillon or similar be there? I do not live in Cork, but I will definitely check it out next time I'm down there. Cheers for the tip!

75cl Cantillion Geuze Bio is €9.50 I believe.
Some of the more specialist Cantillon are €12.50 - like the rose de gambrinius.

Had Troublebrewing's pumpkin ale on tap at the Brewdock last night, a nice little brew, not overpowering. Light spices like cinnamon and a mild pumkin taste. It reminded me of a belgian style beer in a way I couldn't really identify.
