    The final Parents Get-together for the year is due to be held in November, however, with many demands on everybody's time Carmel and I would like to suggest that instead of our usual get-together that we attend the upcoming Diabetes Ireland Public Education Meeting at the Castletroy Park Hotel, Wednesday 5th November 2014 at 7pm and we can catch-up there.

    This is a free public event open to all.

    The Agenda is as follows:

    "Current & Future Management of Type 1 Diabetes" by Professor Clodagh O'Gorman, Consultant Paediatrician, University Hospital, Limerick

    "Physical Activity and Nutrition with Type 1 Diabetes" Ms Pauline Dunne, Dietitian, Diabetes Ireland

    Tea/Coffee

    "An update on Management Challenges in Diabetes: Hazards of Hypoglycaemia" Dr James O'Hare, Consultant Endocrinologist, University Hospital, Limerick.

    Just for information, I did phone Diabetes Ireland and enquire if this event would be suitable for teenagers with T1 and they said they had a few teenagers attend the meeting in Donegal, some were interested and some were not so it was really up to the parents knowing their own individual child.

    Rgds,
    Olivia & Carmel :-)

    Rebecca Flanagan, owner of Ballyvara Guest house in Doolin, co. clare, is organising a weekend retreat for mothers and their daughters with type 1 diabetes.

    The retreat is open to mother/daughter teams, where daughters are aged between 13 and 17 years and will take place on the 6th - 8th February 2015. The weekend costs €70 per mum/daughter team.

    Rebecca's 14 year old daughter has type 1 diabetes and Rebecca is taking the initiative to address the lack of psychological support for young people with type 1 diabetes. It is also a non-profit making endeavour for the Flanagan Family.

    Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, that requires constant monitoring, multiple daily injections of insulin, calculating how much carbohydrate is in your food and how much insulin to take to keep blood glucose sugars within a normal range.

    Living with type 1 diabetes places a huge strain on positive mental attitude and our Type 1 Diabetes conference will focus on the psychosocial impact of living

    The weekend will include a workshop with Helena Farrell from Diabetes Insight, a diabetes nurse educator and counsellor, who will help the girls discuss some of the challenges that living with type 1 diabetes brings and advice on how to deal with those challenges.

    There will also be ample opportunities for the girls to swop diabetes "war" stories, maybe some hiking on the cliffs of moher and of course a pyjama party.

    Anyone interested in attending this weekend should contact Rebecca Flanagan, Ballyvara House, Doolin, Co. Clare. Telephone: 085 8888 581. Ballyvara house can be viewed on www.vrbo.com/386415.

    The Clare Branch of Diabetes Ireland are holding an information evening on ‘understanding food labels’ in the Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis on Tuesday 19th May at 8pm.

    We hope that by attending this session people will learn to more easily interpret nutritional information and food labels, and ultimately better the dietary management of their diabetes” says Pauline Dunne, dietitian with Diabetes Ireland.

    Self-care is an essential part of good diabetes care! To do this well continuously over a long period of time is not easy and reinforcing of good diabetes management tips and advice is needed regularly.

    At first glance food labels are not always easy to understand. There is often confusion between the terms ‘carbohydrates’ and ‘sugars’ with most people only considering sugars to be important. However, both sugars and the amount of total carbohydrate need to be considered by people with diabetes when making food choices.

    This meeting is free to attend. The Clare Diabetes Support Groups can be contacted on telephone number 087 641 5747 or clarebranchdfi@gmail.com.

    Over the past 12 months I have gathered information that I have come across for diabetes support groups all over the country. Most of them have face to face meetings.

    We have lots of online support groups these day (thank god) but sometimes nothing beats a good old fashioned cuppa & chat. So here it is;
    List of Diabetes Support Groups

    If you attend a diabetes support group that I do not have on this list, please send me an email with who I should contact to get details of that group and I will include them also.

    My Animas rep called me this week to let me know that my Dexcom sensors are finally available as a Special Product on the LTI scheme. The only became approved on the Special Product list at the end of January so things might be a bit slow to start.

    Also, someone in one of the facebook groups that VHI has a Medical Appliance claim form and that Blood Glucose meters were covered on it, technically CGM's are BG monitors so it might be worth a shot for anyone on a VHI plan to test out if you can get one this way?

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭philten

    thats good news - So if i can get the Dexcom privately or otherwise, the sensors would be covered on the LTI?

    Our next meeting takes place on Tuesday 19th April at 8pm in The Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis. The topic of this meeting is "Type 1 Diabetes & Living with Complications".

    Our guest speaker is AineMae O'Mahony who has lived with type 1 diabetes for 25 years, and lost her sight at the age of 26. She is the manager of community radio station, Radio Corca Baiscinn, in Loop Head, Co Clare, managing 25 members of staff and volunteers. She appeared on The Late Late Show last November to promote the work she does with Fighting Blindness and is truly an inspirational person.

    IMPORTANT: This meeting will focus on how the complications of type 1 diabetes are not a sign of failure. That by talking about the the complications of diabetes make them less threatening and pretending they don't exist doesn't help any of us. I found this really interesting story on Scot's Diabetes Blog from two very different perspectives.

    Here are some articles that I found about AineMae;
