MMA League Galway Round 2 Results

Another awesome day in Galway at the second round of the League. Despite losing a lot of teens to exams there were still over 90 competitors getting stuck in at the Kingfisher Sports Hall.
A record number of finishes at this event, you could see that none of the fighters were willing to accept a draw and everyone worked really hard to finish.
As always there are a number of people without whom the event couldn't have happened -
First and foremost all the competitors that made the trip to Galway for the event, from Counties as far flung as Donegal, Dublin, Derry, Cork, Limerick Wexford, Waterford and a multitude of others.
The referees for calling it straight down the middle all day Dan, Tim and Paul. Being a League ref is a thankless task to be sure, and the guys deserve hefty kudos for doing as good a job as they did.
Ollie, Sean, Ruth, Tom and Dave for keeping the event running so smoothly and getting us out in record time.
Xtravision for sponsoring Fight of the Day and FightLord for their continued support.

Winner of Fight of the Day and a copy each of UFC Undisputed 2010 courtesy of Xtravision:
Kris Flynn of Husaria in Ennis and Martin Grant from Evolve
Martin's game was accepted on his behalf by team mate Michael O'Connor.

Without further ado, here are the results!

The second most popular way to win is DQ.

I still think the head shot rule is policed too strictly.

I think it has has to be strict as if it is not then where do u draw the line. You will have more participants and coaches complaining about similar head shots from different matches yet only one got a DQ.

I believe it has to be strict as it makes the referees job easier and so he does not have to say that head shot is ok but your one was not.
and makes fighter safety the priority for the league this way.

    This is just my opinion.

One problem that arises is when another fighter ducks into a shot that would have been fair. I think its also worth noting that on ring 1 where mark was reffing for most of the day there was no dq's due to a headshot. I dunno what conversation mark has with the refs before hand but consistency was the worst problem. In one fight a guy was dq's for making minamal contact (pulled his punch and actually hit the shoulder) when his oppponent ducked into a punch but on one the last fight of the day(i think) i counted 6 head shots 4 of which were quite strong punches and from one fighter. 2 from the other fighter one of which was more of an attempt to clinch and the second fighter was dq'd.
All depends on the refs though.

Sometimes guys reach out in an attempt to punch and it can look like a punch when really it isn't. When guys are doing that I usually shot 'watch your target' but I wouldn't DQ as they are not really punches.

I DQ'd two fighters. One was for a blatant punch to the face, not particularly hard but that doesn't matter. The guy acknowledged what he has done straight away and he knew he was doing to get DQ'd for it. It's tough on both guys but these rules are in place for a reason. The second DQ was when both guys were trying in vain for ankle locks and one of them kicked out and hit the other in the head. Again no question about that, that's a straight DQ.

I have had more than my fair share of controversial DQ's believe me, I have also had fighters DQ'ed for head shots. I wouldn't read too much into a statistical anomaly on my ring. If each ring had 4 hundred fights I am very sure the number of DQs would have been much the same in each.

One of the things I love about my day job (software) is that I can model various scenarios and a program will make the same decision, given that scenario, time and time again. It would make for a bad conversationalist, but its very good as a decision engine.

People on the other hand are good conversationalists and don't make exactly the same decision in similar situations time after time because they factor in a human element that machines can't. This makes them better suited for the job of refereeing than robots, with the possible exception of Lt. Cmdr. Data.

I am sure I don't need to point out that while every organisation in the world tries to enforce consistent refereeing, it is impossible to do so. Never had a problem with a call a soccer ref made against your team? I doubt it.

All of us refereeing on Saturday were working from the same blueprint and did our very best to be fair and impartial. I am 100% satisfied with the referees and how they did this. Some people are unhappy with some decisions that were made. This comes as no shock to me, I would be more shocked if there were no complaints, it would indicate referees were not doing their job.
Every sporting event has its share of controversial or unpopular calls, good referees are the ones who can make them and move on.

I have started playing tag rugby in recent weeks and see a tragic disparity week to week between different referees, so far we have been on the wrong side of calls made by these refs. Maybe next week we will be on the right side. Sure its disappointing, but life goes on just the same.

I will continue to make improvements in how the League is run, event to event, my effort to make it safe and fun for everyone involved never wanes.

Do not think that anyone's complaints fall on deaf ears, that is not the case, but please spare a though for how hard a job it is to referee at an event like this, the refs did a great job on Saturday, people should step back and ask themselves how they would have done in their shoes.

Im not really complaining. And like in soccer/boxing/rugby i have no problem with the rule set or how you guys choose to enforce it but like in soccer inconsistancy between refs or even from the same refs will lead to frustration.
All in all was a good day with some great fights and im sure all the fighters learnt some lessons about their own game.
I was again extremely impressed with the teens division.
    Thanks mark.
    See you in august:P

Yeah I do agree with a lot of what is said to be honest or I would not make a 7 hour return journey in one day to go.

I just think that there is something wrong when so many people lose by DQ.

It's a terrible way to win and a frustrating way to loose.

It's not my shout though I'm just voicing my opinion.

I feel the same about C class head shots on the ground in some ways. I see people get DQ'ed far to easy on some shows (IMO)

Especially when its more of a glance when someone ducks rather than a proper punch up the beak.

You need to get your weight down in that case lad, because you will be at a massive disadvantage fighting other guys in the HW division otherwise. You'll find that most guys will wieght the same as you, only its muscle. AT 5ft 9 you need to be aiming for LW or WW.

I was saying 75KG as a figure and I don't know if there is a 75KG division in the MMA league.

did these guys fight eachother twice on the day:

1 ROBERTAS ZILAITIS - ROYAL COMBAT CLUB vs. derek conway - Strange Wolves 75kg Super Lightweight ROBERTAS ZILAITIS Leg lock

only asking as the same fight with same result is showing twice, just with their names the other way round :)

Yes, when there are only two in a division they fight each other twice so both get a full quota of league matches.
