I can give you a reason why it shouldn't be given, suppose a criminal was watching a bank official, in preparation for a tiger kidnapping and the official always used a reliable one man taxi firm, what better way than to kidnap him while in the taxi he always uses, far fetched, maybe not so far as people would like to think.

GARDAÍ are investigating a new form of tiger kidnapping in which a robber posed as a taxi driver when collecting a post mistress.

The raider collected Deirdre Higgins outside her home in Beaumont, north Dublin, yesterday and brought her to her post office in the Omni Park Shopping Centre in Santry.

Detectives believe that the raiders had carried out surveillance on the movements of Ms Higgins.

It appears that the taxi company received a call the night before from a person canceling her taxi. The raiders then sent a bogus taxi to pick up her.

“She always takes a taxi to work. She was picked up by what looked like a taxi, but it was bogus, and brought to work,” said a Garda source.

Locals in Beaumont Crescent said that a second taxi arrived as she was driven off. This is understood to have been a taxi driver from the firm she used who may have got suspicious as to why she cancelled.

When Ms Higgins arrived at the Omni Centre the driver instructed her to go to the post office and withdraw cash and brandished a gun at the woman.

Security at the post office were alerted. Sources said the raider may have got “spooked” and left the scene empty handed.

you're inventing crimes now, in your scenario the criminal would have to arrange to kidnap one person to kidnap another to rob a bank having gone to some office to get the details of the taxi man and thus possibly being on cctv of which ever office they visited.

No you can do it over t'internet. Besides not all crooks are masterminds but if they have an idea they might well try it out. No reason to make it any easier

the register was first instituted in the 2003 Taxi Regulation Act 2003 section 38
and then in the Taxi regualtion Act 2013 section 18 http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2013/en/act/pub/0037/print.html#sec18

when was it put online all the way back in 2003 or does this https://publicregister.nationaltransport.ie/ErrorPage.aspx it suggest that maybe this was first put online in 2010?

There will be an online register of drivers so the State knows what driver is in each car, and consumers will be able to verify this.

it would be interesting to know how many times the online version of it is used.

It also provides information to anyone who might wish to clone the driver's licence as one can now quite easily find out a person's address from these decals. One may be a customer or just passing down a street. One driver showed me how it was possible to change the name of the driver attached to a certain car with use of the app and details from the decal and plate. Some people's details have been available even after they have passed away.

t requires email and a password to get in, so if anybody had both of those, you would have to be pretty determined crook to get those, I don't know how having to have decals on the side of the taxi or not would make a difference?

Shane Lennon told us he only got his taxi back a few days ago, after it was stolen from outside his house last month.
Enough said … It was taken because it is a taxi and it is easily-identifiable as a taxi. The meter was ripped out, the decals were ripped off, they put in a new ignition. Bits and bobs, you know.
Lennon, who has been working as a taxi driver for six years, said he doesn’t believe his car would have been stolen if it wasn’t clear it was a taxi.

whats the benefit of stealing a taxi?
