Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Commuting from Newbridge to Dun Laoghaire

    Hi

    Does anyone know how much it would cost on average for petrol if commuting from Newbridge to Dun Laoghaire? Thinking of taking a job there but need to make sure I can cover my costs with petrol and childcare!

    Anyone know how long it takes in the morning to do this journey?

    Petrol wise you'd need to let people know what type of car you're driving.

    What part of Dun Laoghaire are you taking about? The village itself can be a bit slow in the AM but you may well be working outside of it and manage to dodge the worst of the traffic.

    As a rule allow 1 hour and 15 minutes as you will be exiting the M 50 at rather busy spots (Ballinteer/Sandyford and Cherrywood) but the likelyhood is that you will generally do it somewhat quicker. Petrol wise is impossible to speculate as it will vary depending on car size, speed, efficiency etc. You should allow to be doing around 400 miles a week on this trip if it helps.

    Will you be paying for parking in Dun Laoghaire? If so then maybe look at the public transport options - train from Newbridge to Heuston, 145 bus from outside Heuston to D'Olier St. or Nassau St. or Kildare St., then pick up a 46A to the Dart station in Dun Laoghaire. Or you could do Luas from Heuston to Connolly & Dart to DL but the double bus journey would be cheaper because with a Travel90 ticket it would only be one validation so would cost 2.50 for each back to back bus trip i.e. €5 daily for the bus.

    Definitely need the car for this one as its out of way in Dun Laoghaire. Im driving a Hyundai Getz 1.1 petrol - Im reckoning on around €20 a day - could be way off though......

    Shouldn't cost you that much, I used commute from Swords to Newbridge (so roughly a similar distance) and would have gone through 45 litres of fuel a week in a 1.6 engined car. @ Current petrol prices that would be €75 per week, so closer to 15 a day, and you should get better fuel economy given it's a smaller car.

    You can get www.taxsaver.ie tickets that cover Bus Éireann / Irish Rail / Dublin Bus.

    You can't get a BE taxsaver ticket which covers IR and DB. You need to buy 2 separate tickets.

    Why is another question since only you can add both IR and DB for a few hundred extra.

    I get the impression that Irish Rail will sell you any ticket you want - just phone them. In any case Newbridge-Dun Laoghaire can be done with two operators.
