Pet Hate - Unfiltered Americanisms

    I know we get a lot of American media here.
    I know a lot of people (including myself) follow it, particularly the politics pieces.

    But I cannot stand the people who won't filter it for the Irish context.


    For instance, people who complain about 'Rich White Men' in Ireland.
    It's an American buzz-term, which only makes sense because they have huge poor minorities from different races that were historically discriminated against.

    It makes NO sense to use the signifier White when there is no significant ethnic difference between the rich and the poor in this country - it just means you're an idiot who has read and read, and watched and watched, but has never actually filtered or understood what you were taking in.
    You're just parrotting an empty line.


    Anyone got any other examples that bug them?

    "Can I get a" - usually said in Coffee Shops. You don't say Can I get a when you ask for something anywhere else. You're also not on the cast of Friends.

    Vacation instead of holiday

    Holiday season instead of Christmas

    You do the Math. :confused:

    Ending a sentence with either "right now" or "already". Your sentence should have been succinct enough to have established a time frame.

    Needless use of "so" and "like" in a sentence.

    I'm sure I'll think of more :cool:

    I hate americanisms in general. Any irish person who calls someone a douche, or douchebag should be strung up. It also irritates me to hear people go on about math - it's fúcking called mathS over here you muppet!!

    Another one is the one "There are over a 1000 differences between gay marriage and civil partnersip!!11!"

    Not in Ireland there aren't, that figure is American and has no relevance to this conversation.


    Pro-Weed people do it a lot too.

    I would say most people believe the laws of the land are those they hear argued in American TV courts.

    Over the years I have learnt that some people are idiots. Once I identify someone as being an idiot, I can then unsubscribe from their witterings, by removing them from twitter/facebook, blocking them on boards etc. Once I have done that I find I am slightly less annoyed during the day. I also have an internal black list for certain so called print media.
