Cheers mate, I'll get to that now, thank you!Nope. There were 'legit' bootleg copies of the game (it's weird to explain but trust me it's true). That makes it even harder to track down one of the real deal. A 'legit bootleg' would be OK but you'd want to be careful on price, it's vastly inflated and some palm them off as the real deal.
A similar line can be followed with the Carnival caravan titles, especially Nexzr.
As for AES or MVS, ask the seller to open the cartridge for you and take photos of the board and chip serials. If they can't be bothered to do that for you, or question it, walk away. I recently turned down some nice MVS stuff which was likely legit, but the sellers attitude and utter horror at my request to open the cart just made me jog on.
One other tip. Read the whole advert. I ended up buying a bootleg Prehistoric Isle 2 because I skimmed the small print. The seller was at least honest about it. Many are not.
It's your cash at the end of the day. These items are expensive, nobody wants to be conned in to a bootleg copy of anything. If you're looking at something like the PAL edition of Kizuna Encounter though then a) you won the Lotto and/or b) you'd want the seller to put it in for VGA examination or travel to wherever they live and collect it in person.
Opening AES carts is a pain in the a$$ - I wouldn't risk doing it on a game I owned... well I did try to open my Last Blade 1 as there is a rattle in it, but I couldn't open it and gave up for fear of ruining a game worth over a tonne on a good day!
However, if I do go for a Garou I will take your advice and ask the owner to 'pop the lid' so to speak.Just got Gradius Deluxe .jp and layer Section, my saturn hasn't even arrived yet so I will wait and buy food with the money until the Saturn arrives
For what its worth, in my opinion, the very best shooter on the Saturn is the reasonably priced Soukyugurentai. I'm sure that some will disagree, but for me its is perfect in every way - the graphics are superb, the gameplay is immensely satisfying and the difficulty is spot on. Plus the soundtrack.... oh that soundtrack.... its is unbelievably good.0 -

I'm still undecided between Souky and RS. They both look gorgeous, play fantastically and have two of the best soundtracks I've heard in a shmup.
I kind of slightly prefer the 2D sprites in Souky to the polygon bosses in RS. But then I haven't played RS nearly as much as Souky.

Congrats on the Shooting Gameside. It's a bit of a wallet breaker, and admittedly a bit pointless if you can't read Japanese, but if you're posting in this thread it really shouldn't bother you!
