    Just to clear up any confusion on this forum regarding FDA approved silicone implants, below is an extract from the FDA document "Update on the Safety of Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants (2011) - Executive Summary"
    "In November 2006, the FDA approved two silicone gel-filled breast implants: the Allergan Natrelle and the Mentor MemoryGel. As conditions of approval, the FDA required each manufacturer to conduct post-approval studies to characterize the long-term performance and safety of the devices."

    Website link below for anyone who is interested in reading the full doc:
    http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ImplantsandProsthetics/BreastImplants/ucm259866.htm

    Also as far as I am aware, the FDA recently approved other types/brands of silicone implants and that info can also be found on the FDA website.

    Hi ladies It's 16 days since r&r and must say recovery is so much quicker 2nd time round. I was back in work and driving after 4 days. Have the pip implants in a sealed bag from the hospital they were both intact even thou I have silicon in my lymph nodes??? The right one was slightly discoloured which I believ is a sign it was about to rupture. So glad they are out and I feel lucky to be able to move on now and put this all behind me. Its been an awful 6 months. It's disappointing to hear <SNIP> don't seem to be acting on the promise to CMO to remove all pips for free and havent wrote to all concerned This will just add more stress to the already stressed out ladies who are waiting to remove.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 hedkandigirl

    Girls
    <SNIP> patients should have all gotten a letter by now to arrange there appointment for a consultation by now. Did anyone get their letter's yet? Have they gotten through all the ruptured people yet? I'm worried and not many girls seem to be using this website to talk to one another but its the only way I can contact people to find out anything....... Please <SNIP> girls are you there can you answer, did you get a letter yet, did you have a rupture?

    Just to remind ye all, please no mention of specific clinics or doctors. Any examples we'll have to remove. We've been advised that this could cause legal trouble for the site. Pain though it is. :(

    Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Really hope the rest of ye get sorted out.

    Hi all,

    I'm new to this forum. Had my PIP implants in Dec 2007. It was a very personnal and private matter for me. I always felt that I was unfeminine and couldn't fillan AA starter bra so I had the implants and felt a lot better about myself. What a shock to discover that they put mattress stuffing in me!!

    Had my MRI two weeks ago and waiting on results. I really really want the impants out regardless of whether or not they are ruptured. However, I cannot have them removed wthout having them replaced as I will be left disfigured. Big problem is that things have changed finacially for me like so many of you since I was implanted. It took me six weeks scrimping and scrapping to get the MRI money together and I have absolutely no hope of saving for replacement implants.

    Does anyone have any idea how much it costs to replace the implants? Is there any clinic offering a payment plan? Any information at all would be much appreciated. I have been fighting depression for the past few years now but this issue is sending me to the brink of my insanity.

    Hello ladies,
    after having the MRI and confirming (in May) that mine is raptured I still haven't got an appointment to see anyone from the clinic even though they called me to say that they got the scan results.
    I'm going to my home country to have surgery next week even though I have to pay for it (using my honeymoon funds :( ) because I don't trust the clinic anymore.
    I've already contacted a lawyer who said we have a good case but after seeing the cost of such legal action, I'm concerned. I'm wondering if any of you ladies has decided to proceed with sueing your clinic. PM please because I don't know what to do.
    I'm not interested in becoming rich I only want my money back for my first surgery as I think they did a crappy job in the first place and they used a very low quality product (whether on purpose or they closed an eye on it).

    Very confused and nervous right now!

    Hi Mayblue, totally agree clinic's here can't be trusted and if I was able to afford them with another clinic I'd be gone... Has everyone had a rupture? seem's like everyone says they had a rupture on their scan or when they were removed. Are they lying to use about the real figures of ruptures. Has anyone gotten legal advise and how much should it cost and what were you told? Please everyone reply and keep some sort of information going on this

    Hi , I am sorry girls you have to go through this ... I am one of you who is going thru this nightmare... the worst is over for me I had them removed few month ago as my scan was bad I was too stressed and could not handle the stress need to get rid of them ..I am not from IRL and also trusted to do my surgery here and they were ensuring me that I am in the best hands and will get life product will never have to go thr again ,wasn't an easy decision to do them at the first place ,but I had no confidence and I knew it would change the way I feel about myself was terrified going under knife and this time was even worst , i lost so much weight in such a short time ..I am still feeling depressed its a horrible and so sad that we all going thru this without our fault ...I am going legal with them for sure they are the ones who sold us a cheapest nonmedical product we didn't go to France PIP "shop" factory and buy them so they are the ones here who will have to take care of us ... and I believe they will be in a lot of s*it and thr is no future for them , I am on no win no fee so nothing to loose..can PM you my solicitor contact numb so you could talk to him and see what is the best for you ! also get involved with pipactiongroup you can find a lot of info on facebook ..and if you ask me i think they are not telling us the right % for ruptures , in real life every second girl has problems ...i am one of them ..stay strong girls and if thr is anth i can help let me know ..

    Hi girls, I've had removal and replacement from a doctor who works both from <snip>. He specialises in cosmetic surgery for cancer patients and breast implant revisions normally when something has gone wrong. I highly recommend him. He's very straight and will cover all angles very thorough indeed. I had lateral displacement and an oversized pocket. My op took 2.5 hours because he is such a perfectionist he doesn't cut corners. I must mention I'm a pip patient from <snip>. I was fortunate to get a loan from the bank. I'll be paying it back for 5 years things will be v. tight but all worthed. I'm happier now with implants than original operation. I got FDA mentor implants this time round.I'm 6 weeks over operation and all is going well. I have great faith in this doc and as quoted by another highly qualified doc in <snip>he'd trust him with his life ;) I'm writing a thankyou card to him now;)

    Hi,

    I have been following this thread for quite awhile but I have never posted until now. I had my implants with the <snip> in 2008. I have had an ultrasound in January and there was no rupture present but I would like the implants removed and replaced. Could you please forward me the name of your surgeon and the cost of replacement. I spent 3months trying to obtain my medical records from the <snip> and found there aftercare unsatisfactory the first time around so I wld prefer not to have further surgery with them. If anyone could send on other names and costs of surgeons they have used for replacement I would be very grateful.

    Just to remind all posters, please do not name specific clinics or doctors. For legal reasons we must remove such references.

    Cheers.

    I would appreciate any info on replacement cost. No need to mention doctor or clinic as I know there is a legal issue with this. I can get them removed for free but I have no idea of replacement cost. I need to know so I can figure out how long it will take me to get the money together or if its manageable at all. I would really really appreciate any estimates from girls who have had R&R.

    Girls,
    I paid just under 6000 euros a lot of money for r&r as I was referred to this cosmetic surgeon by hosp. In Dublin where I had MRI this hosp. only deals with reconstruction and this particular surgeon mainly deals with reconstruction of cancer patients aswell. I was shocked at the price but honestly he is an excellent surgeon a perfectionist. I had to go to the banks and will be paying back for 5 years;( but I can sleep at night now;)

    Thanks Gabby1205 for the info on R&R cost. Unfortunately I am already overstretched with the bank as I'm a single girl, serious mortgage and huge pay cuts in the past few years so I think a loan will be out of the question.

    I can't believe that because I can't afford to fix what they did to me that I might have to live with these things in me for a few more years till I can get the money together. I was hoping the replacement cost might be about 2,500 to 3,000 which I could probably get together by early next year.

    I hope everyone is staying strong and I am thinking of you all.

    :confused: Guys I've still heard nothing from the clinic in question.... which we can't name. All I read daily around various websites from different counteries is ruptures and gel bleeds so I'm starting to think there's no one person that doesn't have one or the other. Has anyone heard anything yet? Has anyone decided to go the legal route? Any of your girls that did pay yourself can you give any information on what you were told at the time of your consultation?

    Hi Gabby1205

    Could you possibly PM me the contact details of your surgeon. I was quoted 7200 from a similar surgeon who operates from a private hospital in Limerick. He too does a lot of reconstruction surgery and has a very good reputation but the cost is so expensive I am finding it difficult to raise that amount. Any other info with regard to recovery time etc would be appreciated also.

    why dont a few of you get together and go to a doc and look for a discount based on numbers..
    It might bring down the cost a bit, obviously get a cost for a single person first..

    Hi All,

    just read the above report and thought I would share it - very interesting reading for anyone with PIPs. Have posted the summary below and full report can be read on
    http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/@dh/@en/documents/digitalasset/dh_134657.pdf

    "We have carefully reviewed the available evidence on breast implants from the company Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP), including the results of additional studies commissioned since our interim report in January. We have concluded that
    • rigorous world-wide chemical and toxicological analyses of a wide variety of PIP implants have not shown any evidence of significant risk to human health;
    • there is no reason to believe that further testing will change this conclusion, given the results of the chemical analysis and the number of batches that have now been tested world-wide, which have all reached a similar conclusion;
    • PIP implants are significantly more likely to rupture or leak silicone than other implants, by a factor of around 2-6, and this difference is detectable within 5 years of implantation;
    • in a proportion of cases, failure of the PIP implant results in local reactions but these are readily detected by outward clinical signs – “silent” ruptures (ruptures which come to light only on explantation) are not generally associated with these local reactions.

    In sum, PIP implants are clearly substandard although there is no evidence of a significant increased risk of clinical problems in the absence of rupture.
    In the light of these conclusions we reiterate and amplify our previous advice that:
    • all providers of breast implant surgery should contact any women who have or may have PIP implants– if they have not already done so – and offer them a specialist consultation and any appropriate investigation to determine if the implants are still intact;
    • if the original provider is unable or unwilling to do this, a woman should seek referral through her GP to an appropriate specialist;
    • if there is any sign of rupture, she should be offered an explantation;
    • if the implants still appear to be intact she should be offered the opportunity to discuss with her specialist the best way forward, taking into account the factors listed in paragraph 33 of this report;
    • if in the light of this advice a woman decides with her specialist that, in her individual circumstances, she wishes to have her implants removed her healthcare provider should support her in carrying out this surgery. Where her original provider is unable or unwilling to help, the NHS will remove but not normally replace the implant;
    • if a woman decides not to seek early explantation, she should be offered annual follow up in line with the advice issued by the specialty surgical associations in January 2012 (see para 4). Women who make this choice should be encouraged to consult their doctor if they notice any signs of tenderness or pain, or swollen lymph glands in or around their breasts or armpits, which may indicate a rupture. At the first signs of rupture, they should be offered removal of the implants
    ."

    The report also recognises that anxiety itself is a form of health risk and that this is reason enough for a woman to have her implants removed (if this is what she wants) even if they haven't ruptured.

    Evening ladies, hope you're all doing well.

    As you know, we've gotten orders from higher up to say all legal advice and naming of clinics/doctors etc is not allowed on this forum as it puts Boards.ie in a tricky position. However, we recognise that this thread has been a wonderful source of support and information as well as an outlet for you all to complain about this disgraceful situation. With the limitations we've put in place, we're not entirely sure that this thread serves its purpose any more.

    We mods have had a lengthy debate about it, and have decided that in 1 week's time (Monday 2nd July) we will close this thread and it will be time for ye to move on to a new community. You have the option of making your own forum, or a facebook page, or something similar, if you wish to continue to provide support to each other. There are many free forum hosters, such as Invisionfree, ZetaBoards, or Forumotion.

    We're sorry that it has to come to this, but we hope you can understand. Feel free to ask any questions relating to this decision, and we'll do our best to answer.

    With best wishes for everything in the future from the mod team in tLL,

    Fluorescence, Ickle Magoo, Maple, rainbow kirby, Chad Bitter Cross and Wibbs
