Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    IF an Irish Gov did put VAT on shoes, as an incentive they could give 100 free shares in Anglo Irish with every pair of shoes !- it wouldnt cost anything !:p

    why shouldn't there be VAT on childrens clothes?

    there is no need not to have it, especially with the overly generous child benefit payment parent already benefit from.

    get rid of one or the other.

    well the commission on taxation has recommended means testing child benefit, id imagine that will definitely be coming in in some shape or form

    That would make a lot more sense than imposing VAT on childrens clothes which would have a much larger impact on those on lower incomes. As with most VAT increases all that will happen is that people will buy less.

    VAT on food is of much greater concern and could possibly be contested through the courts as an attack on peoples basic human rights.

    Tax the shoes, increase child benefit by a commensurate amount and tax child benefit.

    Why should €100 women's shoes of small sizes be VAT-free?
