It is good to see that Knocanure has taken up the torch and has filled the breach left vacant that was so ably manned by Lovely Writer over many years. I am sure Beal Bocht, Price of the Pint and many more on distant shores will appreciate the continual printing of the Parish newsletter and will reciprocate with their own worthwhile contributions. “There Is Always a Time for Heroism”
    By GR Jordan
    From The Emerging Revival, 1946
Once Wendell Phillips and a young friend were sitting by the fire. It was a memorable evening. Recollections had flushed the cheeks of the veteran campaigner. Memories of former heroic days had loosened his tongue. He had completely lost himself in the thrilling recital of the past. The young visitor sat enthralled. At last, when he recognized that the evening was far gone, he rose with a start. “Mr. Phillips,” he exclaimed, as he grasped the older man’s hand, “if I had lived in your time, I think I would have been heroic too!” The veteran, who had accompanied his young visitor to the door, was noticeably aroused. As he pointed down the street, he drew the attention of his companion to flaunting indications of audacious vice. His voice was tremulous with indignation as he exclaimed: “Young man, you are living in my time, and in God’s time! Be sure of this: No man could have been heroic then who is not heroic now.”

CD of John Hunt, Chicago By Pat Brosnan.
During the past week a very interesting CD was presented to me featuring John Hunt who is a native of Dromada, Athea but has lived for most of his life in Chicago.
The interview for the CD was conducted by Willie O’Reagan of West Limerick Radio when John Hunt was on holiday last month in Ballybunion.
John Hunt who is aged 93 gave a very comprehensive run-down on the story of his life which began in Athea. In the CD he describes his early years during the War of Independence and later the Civil War in which he became an active member of the Republican movement. He describes in detail his great interest in his hopes for a United Ireland and of the part he himself played in his efforts to accomplish that ideal. He tells about the time he was interned in the Curragh prison camp with more of his comrades in the years after the De Valera Government came to power having used the IRA and the Republican movement to help them get into Government. He describes the very poor conditions in which the Republican prisoners were held in the camp and how on one occasion he and some of his comrades burned one of the internment huts and how they were ruthlessly punished for doing so.
John Hunt at the age of 93 speaks very clearly of those days and has some vivid memories of those happenings. He speaks about his disappointment at seeing the various political parties accept the partition of the country for which so many of his comrades had died and he still thoroughly believes that there will be no permanent peace in the country until it is united. He maintains that his Republican ideal is as firm as ever and that he would never be happy until the country is united.
During his time in Chicago John has continued to support Irish organisations and has played a prominent part in American GAA circles. At one stage of his life he was a candidate in a Chicago Mayoral election.
John comes home every year for a months holiday which he usually spends in Ballybunion. During his holiday he usually visits Athea and links up with some of his friends and relations there which he enjoys very much.

Thanks Knoc for keeping this board updated again :) It's good to see the Listowel thread going strong :D

I'm just posting to let anyone who might be interested know that there will be a few people meeting in the Arms tonight (Wednesday) at 8pm for board games again. Post up or pm me if you'd like to join

The games we have include ones such as Dixit, Quirkle, Carcassone, Monopoly Deal (a much snappier card-game version of the full thing), Discovering Ireland, Rummikub... If you don't know them, don't worry, we never mind going through the rules again for each one as needed :D Oh, and if you'd like to bring some of your own, that'd be cool too, but optional :)

the playing of organised board games is an interesting way to pass away the oncoming long winter nights. I have never really been into board games myself however I had an insight into how popular they can be while visiting a bar near Wrigleyville Chicago some years ago, about 10 tables were taken up by board game enthusiasts.
Some years ago I put a " know your old Listowel" quiz questions up on boards, at the time it proved very popular, maybe it could be repeated at some stage in the coming months

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 Jadytte

Wow, 10 tables? Well we haven't had anywhere near those numbers any night as of yet :P Unfortunately tonight we don't actually have the numbers to go ahead at all in the end, so I better confirm that it's cancelled for this evening before I go on... (but if anyone wants to join another time, we do meet up most Wednesday nights anyway, and we should be back again next Wednesday night).
I think at one of our meetups someone made the observation that traditionally in Ireland we tend to see a lot of the same games (Monopoly & Cluedo in 5 million different versions for example) and not many other board games that are actually quite popular worldwide.. but slowly and surely we're hearing more about those other games, which is quite fun :)

That "know your old Listowel" sounds like it could be a fun quiz - I'd be embarrassed at how little I probably know though, but it could prompt me to find out more about my local town :D

    CHURCH NOTICES

PARISH MISSION: A sincere ‘congratulations’ to all who attended or were part of our Parish Mission this past week. The feedback has been excellent and it was a most faith filled occasion of grace for our Parish. I was personally very heartened by the people of this Parish to see so many - making an effort to being involved, being present and making so many sacrifices to being there from 7.00 a.m. to late each evening. It was really edifying and encouraging as it reached out to all age groups. Well done to everybody! Can I say a special thanks to the members of the Parish Pastoral Council and the various groups who took responsibility for the different sessions. It did take a lot of work but it has been worth it. We were blessed with a fabulous Mission Team, appropriate weather and I wish to thank all of you who played your part big or small. Can I mention specifically Denise in the Parish Office and Billy in the Sacristy for their professionalism and dedication to the Mission this past week. A great end to the ‘Year of Faith’ celebrations. Fr. Declan

    From New Zealand Tablet
DEATH Fr O Connor, NZ Tablet 9 April 1882
    THE LATE REV. FATHER O'CONNOR.
(From our Christchurch correspondent.) Very great and widespread regret is felt at the demise of the Rev. Father Daniel O'Connor, who died somewhat unexpectedly at his
late residence at Rangiora at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, 31 March 1882. The rev gentleman, who was parish priest of Rangiora, had not been in a robust health for some time. Yet no serious results of his indisposition were anticipated until he visited Wellington in the early part of the year in order to consult Dr. Cahill, who informed Father O'Connor that his malady was a hopeless consumption. In accordance with the doctor's advice Father O'Connor abandoned his projected visit to Napier and returned home. He became rapidly worse and succumbed to the disease. He was going about on Tuesday last and apparently fairly well. On the night of the same day he retired at eight o'clock but became restless and unable to sleep. Father Tubman, M iss Kellier and the Rev. Mother and the Sisters of St. Joseph were with him to the end. Father O'Connor, who was approaching forty years of age, was born at Listowel. County Kerry. Ireland. he studied at St. John's College in Waterford, and was ordained priest on the l5 of June, I882. Immediately after his ordination he came to Christchurch, under Archbishop Redwood, who appointed him to Greymouth. Thence he came to Port Lyttleton, where he remained several years. For the administration of that parish he received warm praise from Archbishop Redwood. Ten years ago Father O'Connor was appointed parish priest of Rangiora. where he has done most excellent work. He was always most generous in supplementing from his own pocket the funds for the maintenance of the schools, and in every way sought to promote the cause of education. The whole parish is left absolutely free of debt. During his residence in the Rangiora and Kaipoi districts he has endeared himself to all classes of people. His house and all that it contained was open to every one. As an instance of the warm affection of his people for him, some of the ladies of the parish waited upon him a few days before his death in order to present him with a purse of sovereigns wherewith to meet the extra expenses of his illness. This thoughtful action made a deep impression upon the dying priest, and he was most anxious to acknowledge the gift through the newspapers. This he did not live to do.
THE FUNERAL. On Friday last the funeral of the late Father O'Connor took place at Rangiora. On the forenoon of that day the remains, encased in a handsome polished coffin, were conveyed from the presbytery to the church, and a large number of the Rev. Father's parishioners and the townspeople visited the church to take a last look at his features. The sanctuary of the church and the high and side altars were draped in black, and the coffin was placed on a dais in front of the altar railing. At 10. am. a procession, headed by the cross-bearers and acolytes, started from the presbytery to the church. In the procession were the Right Rev. Dr. Grimes. Canon O'Donnell. Fathers Bowers, Chervier, Marnane, Tubman, Malone, Aubrey. Foley. Ginalty, Tracy, Quirk and Melu. On arriving at the church the office for the dead was chanted in the presence of the congregation from all parts of the district. When this part was concluded, a Solemn Requiem Mass was said. Father Cherviers being the chief celebrant, Fr Murnane, deacon father Quirk, sub-deacon Fathers O'Donnell and Malone, Cantors Fr Bowers master of ceremonies and Father Aubrey organist. After the Mass Bishop Grimes delivered an eloquent address from St. John, chapter ii., and the 11th and succeeding verses. He said, referring to the deceased, that it was. not necessary, nor would it be seemly, for him to add much to the obituary notices which had appeared in the public press. He remarked upon the late Father's devotion during his, time of illness aid the extraordinary grace which availed him during his Last moments He referred also in grateful terms to those who had devote I themselves to caring for him during his last illness and also to the kindness of the parishioners only a few days before his death gave a tangible show of their sympathy for him The bishop then nave the last absolution, which concluder the service in the church
The procession was then formed, the children from St. Joseph's School, with draped banners, being in the front. The coffin, was borne from the church by Messrs. M. Lynskey. E. Anderson, T. McGrath and Thomas Power. The interment. at the cemetery in Rangiora took plaice in the presence of a large concourse of people, a great proportion of whom had not found room in the church. The ceremony at the grave was conducted by the Bishop and concluded at one o clock. Numerous wreaths were sent by friends and public organisations. Among others who sent these floral tributes of sympathy (were Mr. and Mrs.Shreland, the Rangiora Athletic Association. Mr and Mrs . M Scott. Miss K. McDonnell Ashburton, Mr. and Mrs B. Flynn, Miss Foley, Mr. and Mrs. T. Ross and family. Misses Lizzie and Annie Lynskey. Miss Burns and Miss Doherty (Christchurch) others oppressing regret at the rev. Fathers death came from all parts of the Colony, including one from Bishop Verdon (Dunedin), Bishop Lenihan (Auckland) .and the Very Rev. Father Devoy (Wellington). The sad news of the death reached Bishop Grimes when on a visit to Mount Cook, and he travelled night and day to be present at the funeral. Among these present were the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr. C. I. Lennings), the Rev. F. P. Fendall, Messrs. H C Bailey, W. Buss, D. R Good, G Cone, J. Sansom. A. Parsons H Flynn, B. Blackett, A. C. Clarkson, T. Roebuck, T. Green, of the Katspoi pah, M. Duncan and Messrs. McNamara, Gaffney, W. Heyward and Barrett, of Christchurch.

Solo in South Sudan Helena leaving Sudan today, wishing her a safe return.
Posted on October 21, 2013 by helenacodyre

Disclaimer: this is likely to be another sentimental post so turn away now if you’re not if a soppy disposition!

I have been thinking in the last few days about my time here and in that reflection I have come to realise that nothing was as I expected. I’m not sure I knew what to expect but I remember before the trip being very nervous about the fact that I was making a pretty large step into the unknown on my own. A long term relationship which gad seemed so full of hope had ended in a pretty messy fashion and I think I focused on the fact that I was alone and about to embark on this trip without company.

It is no secret that I hate being alone. I look for company and I’m always surrounded by friends or family. I don’t like my own company and the very thought of spending an evening or weekend on my own depresses me completely.

I was so wrong about this trip. Since the very minute I stepped out of the airport in Nairobi, I have been among friends. John Marren collected me from the airport when I arrived and we very quickly became life long friends. He has been a marvellous support and the very dearest friend and I am so thankful that my trip started with his company.

Fr. Tim has been like a big brother to me, supporting me when I needed it and teasing me when that was required too. I have learned much from him. He cares for the people here so deeply and is so committed to education and to the futures of the young people. The people of Narus and indeed much further afield respect him greatly. He is calm and sincere and wise. He always seems to know what the right course of action is and is motivated by the needs of others always before his own. Most of all, I have learned that small kindnesses that seem trivial to us mean the world to other people. I’m really glad that I will have a few days in Nairobi with him. I think saying goodbye to him today too would just be too much!

And John Joe – what have I learned from him! Well, the art of turning reheated beans and rice into a Michelin star serving is not to be scoffed at. I tease Fr. John Joe all the time that he always sees the better in people. I tease him but I deeply respect him for it. He looks at the world through a different lens than me. When people do something I do not agree with or think is right, I get angry about it. I focus on the outcome of that action. Fr. John Joe has a unique way of seeing why a person might act the way they do. I get angry about the corruption that is rife here, he feels for the circumstances that drive people to behave that way.

So you see, with company as I have had, with the friends I have made not just among the Kiltegan priests but the people of Narus I have not once been alone. I have not felt lonely or isolated. On the contrary, I have been amongst the very best of friends and I will always be very thankful for that.

Maybe I should change the name of this blog to “Happy in South Sudan” or “The best version of myself in South Sudan”

    Listowel Emmets Ladies:

With two eagerly awaited finals due to be played last weekend there was major disappointment when both games did not go ahead. The under 14’s were all togged out in Mountcoal for the Division 1 B Shield Final against Castleisland Desmonds when Castleisland failed to field. The only consolation being that the girls have finished their remarkable year by winning the League.

Meanwhile due to the inclement weather conditions the County Board were unable to find a pitch and the Division 1 B League Final with Southern Gales did not take place. The season is now complete for the Seniors who have made significant progress with many new young players introduced to the adult ranks this year. Management would like to thank all players for their efforts during the 2013 season.

This Saturday November 2nd a Listowel Emmets Ladies selection will play a charity memorial against Kerry Garda Ladies in memory of Garda Carmel O’Connor. All proceeds raised will go to the Kerry Parents & Friends Association in Listowel. This was a really wonderful game last year and was such a success that it was decided to make it an annual event. We would love to have as many people as possible to come out and give support on the day. If it is anything like last year we will have enough tea, cake and sandwiches to feed an army. All are welcome, throw in at 2.00 P.M. at Frank Sheehy Park.

Minor Trials for the 2014 Minor Panel and for other age groups are now taking place. There will be trials every Sunday with venue's and times to be confirmed. Details of trials when confirmed will be available on the Kerry Ladies Football Website and Facebook page.

    Listowel Emmets Monthly Draw:
The next draw will take place on Wednesday 30th October at the Clubhouse in Frank Sheehy Park.

Progressive 41 Card Drive: continues every Wednesday night in the Clubhouse at 9.00 P.M.
