We have our big scan on friday, and we will also find out the gender, we had our "surprise" the first time, but for the sanity of our older child who keeps asking we are going to let them know if we can, and they'll be the first one we tell,

we don't object to people knowing the gender (if we can see it at the scan that is) yet oddly enough we object when they ask us if we have thought of any names, :D i'm very strange about telling what names we have currently in mind because a: everybody has an opinion and b: someone somewhere will object to them for a random reason anyway :)

i'm getting to that stage i forgot about from the last time too where everyone (even where i work) is touching my belly i feel like screaming "hands off" at them so much although i don't because i know they are just excited for us,

I've got my "big scan" on Thursday afternoon (@19+4) - looking forward to it and a little bit nervous at the same time. We're most likely going to find out the gender but keep it quiet for a while.

    Mine's the following Thursday :-)
Hope it goes well for you.

Big scan tomorrow (21+2), probably going to find out gender if we can, though we're not going to tell people. I'm not too fussed about everyone knowing but Himself wants to keep it to ourselves.

We've pretty much decided on a boy's name but we're stuck on a girl's. I'd always had an idea of what I'd like to call a wee girl but now that the moment is here, I haven't a clue!!!

As far as people touching my bump goes, there's a couple of girls at work who are very touchy-feely. One in particular is a bit creepy in that she bends down to talk to my bump as well!

I'm trying to decide on a buggy - holy Mother of God but there's a lot of stuff to choose from!!! I'm going to wait til the Christmas sales to buy but I'm getting my research done now lol Leaning towards the Quinny Buzz but looking at second hand as it's E800-on sale!!!

We've started looking around at buggies and all of that online and in some of the stores, really trying not to spend more than around £500 on a travel system though, some of them are insane! I'm kinda looking at the Cosatto Woop in the Old Skool print, coming in at £465 on Amazon with the car seat.

Names are bloody hard! I'm looking forward to finding out the gender so we can eliminate a large chunk. Because we aren't in Ireland we can't really use some of the Irish names with spellings and pronounciation that are a bit impenetrable, and our surname is not the easiest to match names to.

My husband has a very scientific system for names. Well first, we didn't even look at names til we knew the sex. Then I write down all the names I like the sound off, so does he. This goes in an excel (yeah yeah I know overkill!). I give a score from 1-5 for each name (1 = hate the name with the passion, 5 = I'd love that name) and so does he. The scores are added, and then you can sort by highest points. So we've narrowed it down to a top 15 so far. We'll leave it aside for a month, we can always add names if we want, and then we'll narrow it down further after looking at how popular each name is (we don't want the most common name) or if it means something rude in one language or the other, or how it sounds with the surname, or if someone famous and horrible has the same name.
It worked well for our first child, I love his names.

(I always laugh when I describe his system, it makes him sound like a nut, when he's not!)

Oh Ivy that's a system and a half!

My husband suggested a girl's name many years ago, long before a baby was actually on the cards, it was Neveah, incidentally. The name then grew on me. I still like the sound of it. But when we found we were expecting a girl he said he'd gone off it. So it was off the table.

When our daughter was 6/7 months old when a footballer (can't remember who) introduced his baby girl Neveah Rose! There was a lot of negative comments on the name, made me glad himself had gone off it.

I hope I haven't offended any Neveahs or Neveah parents now. I do actually like the name.

    I like Neveah!
Our son's name is Liam, and not being a teenager, I didn't realise that one of One Direction is called Liam. So lots of young ones over here are calling their babies Liam, cos it's exotic and all. It's sort of a skanger name :( (Strangely, Killian is really popular among skangers over here, there are a lot of teachers in my husband's family, and they said that if there is a Killian in the class, he' ALWAYS a brat!). Liam has gone from being maybe the 50th most popular name in France, before he was born, to being No. 14!

On another subject, I got injected with the flu vaccine yesterday, I'm completely wrecked today!

I had my flu shot a couple of weeks ago, felt like someone had punched me on the arm for about two days and if I rolled over onto it in my sleep it would wake me up. Felt fine in general though.

    ... I like Killian/Cillian for a boy...

I like Killian too but I wouldn't call a child Killian over here, unfortunately.

    Hi ladies,
I'm a bit late to the show, I am currently 19+3 pregnant with our first baby, we tried for 2 years and eventually got pregnant with a little help from the fertility clinic.

We don't have our next scan until 21+2 and hopefully we can find out the gender then.

I have been looking at prams and I cannot for the life of me even begin to chose one, I really have no idea where to start with all the styles and choices. Also as we live in a small apartment space is an issue for us to buying other baby products is also a big concern, which I stress about.

Had my scan on Wednesday, it was totally amazing!!! Everything is all clear and healthy, thank god. Started crying at one point when baby looked at us and waved!! (I realise it's not actually doing either of those things but still, it's so fricking awesome!!!) Technician wasn't 100% on gender because the cord was hanging between the legs. Lots and lots of photos, showed Himself's mammy yesterday and she couldn't get over how much detail can be seen - there's one of both feet with the toes clear as day lol Baby spent the entire scan with either its knees or feet up by its head, at one point it looked like it was sucking its toes! lol

I was reading somewhere about a comedy on Channel 4 ast weekend where the couple (Irish mammy) called the baby Muireann and all the fun that followed where people tried to figure out how to pronounce it!

Big scan yesterday, all good

    :D It's a boy :D

Big scan was today, baby fine and healthy. He's a lazy bugger though taking after his dad already :pac:, still not much movement. Did anyone else get some 4D pictures? I was given 6 ultrasound pics, 2 of them were 4D.

What are 4D pics? I've had 3D pics alright. My gyny got a brand new shiny scanner just before I got pregnant with my first child, he's like a child with a toy! You can even bring a blank dvd if you want to save video of the scan!

Maybe it's 3d I mean. (Makes more sense actually) I got two pics like this, just wondering if it's the norm.

Yeah they're the ones! I just thought maybe there was a new thing out that I didn't know about! :)

I don't know if it's the norm, I don't think over here in France everyone gets them, I'm going private, and he's a specialist in scans so I think he's a special case! :)

Popping in from the June thread. Just wondering, as you guys are a but further along but it's still fresh in your memories, when did your symptoms ease? I never puked but felt quite nauseous throughout the day. I'm 9wks5days and nausea has pretty much disappeared this week.

I'm a tad nervous due to 2 miscarriages this year and loss of symptoms was always what happened. Boobs are still full and tender so trying to seek solace in that. Had early scan and all was ok. Just terrified something might have changed this week.

What week did you guys feel better? Is week 9 a bit early?

Both times any nausea I had calmed down around then.

My nausea subsided around the 11 week mark and my appetite returned. I've been making up for lost time since :)

Since then my pregnancy has gone smoothly, I had the big scan last week and thankfully it all looks good. I'm beginning to get used to the baby's movements, he/she hasn't quite settled into a routine but it's nice to feel the occasional kick

I'm from the Sept thread+ all my symptoms disappeared at around 10 weeks. I panicked+ called the doctor. Was told it was fine, hormones level out. Baby girl is 6 weeks old now :-)

I didn't have that much nausea but any that was there was gone by around 12 weeks, thankfully.

Little one has been crazy active this weekend, and kicked hard enough yesterday for my husband to feel it on the outside! Quite a nice little moment :) 21 weeks yesterday.

So ladies, I went to get my 21 week scan today in the hospital and they said they are only 60% sure it is a girl. Will there be another opportunity to make sure it is a girl or should we pay privately for a 3d scan?

  • Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 26,928 Mod ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Can't see the public system being too generous with an extra scan just to find out the gender if they got all the anomaly scan measurements done at the 20 week scan. Might be worth going private if you want to be a little more sure!

Exactly what I was thinking, I might invest in a 3D/4D scan. have any of you ladies got this done or thinking about it?

Hi, I've registered with my doctor for pregnancy - I can't remember the name of the form I completed! I am moving house and area so my doctor will be miles from my new home. Does anyone know if you can change doctor mid-pregnancy? Also does anyone have any recommendations for doctors in Dundrum. Thanks

    Just popping in from June!

I see Dr Derval Mercer in the gables medical centre in Dundrum, it's an all female practise. She is brilliant, extremely personable and in my opinion a really good doctor. Their surgery is just at the round about above dundrum shopping centre although they are in temporary premises on the ballinteer road while the surgery is being done up :) they should be back in the usual place next month.

I'm thinking about it too. I had an anomaly scan earlier this week in Limerick and the baby wasn't playing ball position wise so I couldn't find out the gender. They could take all the other important measurements and thankfully the baba looks healthy!

I'll see how impatient I get over the next few weeks but I'd be tempted to book a private one. My partner couldn't make the anomaly scan due to work so I can use that as another excuse :D

What is everyone's opinion on buying items for the baby before it arrives? I would be quite reluctant to make big purchases so far in advance for fear of jinxing the pregnancy. We have browsed mothercare and some other shops but I've pulled back on buying. I have been researching buggies, cots etc. and I know the essentials that we will have to buy but I'm not sure when we should actually purchase them? Because January is always tough financially I'd like to buy items now and spread out some of our spending. Any thoughts?
