the blackout is going great! there's thousands of sites down all in protest of sopa/pipa

Well, hopefully it'll get into the casual net users conciousness now, and make the idea of net censorship so repuslive politically it won't be touched on for a while.

This has a pretty good point.

In summary, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) - that group that Capcom said thay'd stand by - supports SOPA. The ESA run E3 and it's their biggest sources of income, so Extra Credits/Screw Attack/Loading Ready Run/Red 5 Studios are asking that everyone boycott E3 until they change their stance. Failing that, they ask that everyone contact their games news site or company of choice and ask them not to attend.

    TIGA are against SOPA

It's a pity Facebook Google and Twitter didn't have the stones to blackout.

Switch them off for a week and SOPA would never pass.

Looks like it's genuinely turning toxic... little bit of history, the day the internet defended itself.

Stolen from YLYL. Little of irony.

Wiki blackout seems to actually have worked.
My housemate who usually has absolutely no interest in this sort of thing asked me what SOPA was and was quite horrified by my cliff notes version of it.
I imagine that Wiki message has reached a lot of people.

5th most visited site on the net IIRC.

And as Doom's link shows, it might be working.

The guy who proposed PIPA has been caught with a background which would make it liable to be taken down in SOPA/PIPA land on his website.

It'd be funny if it weren't so sad!

    http://www.independent.ie/business/technology/google-joins-wikipedia-in-24-hour-blackout-protest-over-proposed-us-antipiracy-laws-2991940.html

"Chris Dodd, the chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, said in a statement: "A so-called 'blackout' is yet another gimmick, albeit a dangerous one, designed to punish elected and administration officials who are working diligently to protect American jobs from foreign criminals."

Last month, Dodd argued that if the Chinese government was able block websites then it should be possible in the US too. "

    Queue the Chimerica bandwagon.

I hate that line of argument. No one will invest in IT start ups if SOPA or PIPA goes through, thus killing one of America's biggest potential growth areas.

TBH I don't think it'd even help, as the people who pirate will simply find new ways to pirate.

I never thought I'd hear people saying that we need to be more like China in terms of freedom of information.

If SOPA/PIPA go through, people can easily just go back to friend networks of DVD sharing to get their stuff anyway.

It seems that the concerted internet effort is starting to pay off at a 'real' level with senators backing out.

"Several sponsors of the legislation, including Senators Roy Blunt, Chuck Grassley, Orrin Hatch and John Boozman and Marco Rubio, said they were withdrawing their support. Some blamed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for rushing the Senate version of the bill."

    ...Nice synopsis for Wednesdays blackouts

    ACTA

I've just written to every Irish MEP to urge they don't support ACTA, the secret international nasty version of SOPA (I know!)

    Key points:

Jobs, tech startups Google Facebook Twitter Microsoft HQ in DUBLIN
Censorship, privacy and hard fought freedoms
Internet, is not a problem, but a massive opportunity, for new and old media alike
Democratic and free Europe would new willingly embrace a chinese style internet.
Tech savy Irish don't support etc.
Back to hit home on the jobs created by and future jobs in tech industry at threat by ACTA

And a thank you for your time.

Should you wish to do the same:

    Emails are all there.

Scary stuff once again - this actually looks worse with customs allowed search laptops and MP3 players. We could all end up like Spooky and down equipment...

Will be contacting MEPs for sure and have signed a petition or two. I presume the most relevant for me are any in the South (or do I pick the guy from my county?)?

There was a report on rte 9oclock news about the polish government hack in protest to acta. Also mentioned the online protests against sopa & pipa.

    RTE! Who'd have thunk.

Apparently the polish government are reconsidering their position.
