I think the term is 'illusion of knowledge' As Hawking said: “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.”

Quite a few 'Skeptics' (as in pseudo skeptics/cynics) - and many 'believers' it has to be said - tend suffer this a lot in that they tend to believe certain things dont or do exist, without actually having any knowledge to back it up.

Suffer? suffer what? what are you talking about! Don't believe everything you read.. Hawkings, as smart as he is, got things wrong himself. I was listening to a lecture by an 11 year old kid last night who seems to believe he will break Einstein's theory of relativity..he was born autistic btw.

And I'm happy to wait and see what happens also. I mean, what could I do if aliens want to watch the Earth (with that type of technology). We couldn't do anything. It's the type of thing I'll worry about when it happens. Which I doubt will be in the near (or far) future. So, there's no real point in getting in too much of a flap about it.

It's true there is nothing we could do about it, and I think this is the bit that terrifies people and makes them poo-poo even thinking about the idea of alien existence in our vicinity of the universe.

They are used to the idea of being masters of Earth. The fact is we are not really Masters of anything, as can be seen by our complete inability to prevent climate change or environmental destruction or World Wars to date.

suffer the belief that they are skeptics rather than out and out cynics.

“The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.”

Forgive me in saying , wouldn't the greatest enemy of knowledge be the illusion of knowledge and ignorance.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,660 ✭✭✭✭maccored

true. i think though he was trying to make the point that the illusion of knowledge is as bad as no knowledge at all ... if not worse.

Depends on who you ask i suppose.. when you consider how long it took "humanity" to accept the kind of ideas that evolved into what you actually have in your hand right now. It's all so normal.. just as if it appeared out of thin air.

id wager, it is the illusion of knowledge that drives us forward.

How would that work out? The pretense of knowledge - ie thinking we know more than we actually do - drives us forward? Wouldnt that drive us backwards?

i guess, philosophically speaking (im being very philosphical these days:) ..i was kind of inferring, that if humanity didnt exist, our collective knowledge would be just an illusion. Knowledge can appear to be genius, or madness.. depending on cultural norms of what people deem acceptable in modern society, science itself is not impervious. You don't have to go very far to see that sometimes our wild and vivid imaginations can be just as valid as the things we create out of it. Nor do we have to understand everything to make things work.

I'd stop you there since if that were the case there wouldn't be anything to discuss nor anyone to discuss it with. We wouldn't have a collective knowledge etc etc if humanity didn't exist.

Interesting radio interview with Dr Edgar Mitchell, the 6th astronaut to walk on the moon..

He claims that he is priviliged to know for a fact that aliens have indeed visited earth, not sure we can get more credible than Mitchell :confused: Thoughts?

Fascinating that someone with his profile would come out & just say things like that

When Mitchell elaborated he said he heard stories from other people, so it's hearsay, not first person evidence.

Actually, Astronaut Gordon Cooper has said something similar regarding ufos.

    Yeah seems that way:
In an interview with Fox News on July 25, 2008, Mitchell clarified that his comments did not involve NASA, but quoted unnamed sources, since deceased, at Roswell who confided to him that the Roswell incident did involve an alien craft. Mitchell also claims to have subsequently received confirmation from an unnamed intelligence officer at the Pentagon

What I find fascinating is that someone with a profile like his, would bother engaging in hear-say etc. Short of book sales, whats the point? Unless he's actually telling the truth?! :)

The Ariel school case in Zimbabwe is fascinating. There's a doc in production at the moment.

Your probably correct. But if you dont have a body for a skeptic to lick, then its not proof or even good evidence.

Kinda like the patterson gimlin bigfoot video back in the 60s. No special effects team in the world could create it back at that time. Yet skeptics wont even consider it.

Very interesting case, no one can prove it is faked.

More on the Ariel school thing. This vid has clips from the kids 20 years later. They appear utterly credible.
