Septic Tank Mains

    Just wondering what's the situation with septic tanks now. Is it better to have connected to.mains or not? I don't know much about but am trying to find out more.

    Depends on what critera/information you are looking for? I cant speak for the public main sewer but Septic tanks or the newer treatment systems are a large enough investment and you have to have a large enough portion of ground for percolation depending on your soil conditions. You also have to be careful regarding cleaning chemical useage and flushing baby wipes down the toilet is a big problem for many systems.

    My own experience is that I bought a house 4 years ago with a septic tank/treatment unit and at the time, septic tanks were not really topical issues when house buying so naively we didnt investigate too deeply. The house was built in 04 and the septic tank was poorly fitted/installed and the previous owner took shortcuts. The treatment unit was not working which cost us 2k and the last year we had to install a percolation area as it turns out there wasnt one installed. Including the percolation test this has cost us 4.5 K.
    Plus there is annual service Visit @ about €200 for upkeep of the system(this is optional many homeowners dont do this) and the septic tank inspections. There is also a callout charge if anything goes wrong with the treatment unit plus any parts required.

    On the other side when my my brother was building his house in 06 he installed a bord na mona unit and he has never had any issues with it and has never had anyone to service/check it.
