Hard to know - although it doesnt seem to be too hard getting over 30kph in anything other than a headwind. Certainly seems to be easier on the legs as regards brick running anyways!

Met one of your club mates up in Louisburgh, IM Bolton no less he must be a glutton for punishment

He's going well on the new bike. I've been out with him while he has been on the old and new bike I am 99% sure that the new bike is making a difference.

Yeah, the choice of IM's being taken on by club members this year seem particularily sadistic. 1 x Lanza, 1 x Nice, 2 x Bolton... What's wrong with picking a non-killer bike course

Did you really offer your resignation to the lady marshall?? Oh god...only you. ;) Well, not the result you wanted, but you have a healthy perspective. Are you still doing Galway Cope? And props to Mrs. C for knowing when a drunken sugar rush is in order. :)

You are off the hook there unless you really want to do it and I will enter (think you are going to be in the East of the country then anyways), its on a sunday so it would dig into a big training week, plus I don't seem to react well to under performing in B and C races so I think I wont be doing anything till the Humbert now

This warm-water-seeking body will pass on your tempting offer, so you are off the hook as well. ;) Maybe you can pick a more tropical location next time. :)

Sunday - I was planning on doing a long run but with hopefully a big weeks training with the family away, I just did a slow 5k run down to the bridge and back. My slow runs always involve a stop to say hello to the dogs on the way, they are all friendly on the local route. For the 1st time the bulldog who usually just barks and turns around in circles as I go by got brave and came out to say hello. There is also a Puck dog on the route as well and the uglier for me the cuter they are (dogs not women)

    Monday -
Some quality time with the young lad before and after work just left me the one run at lunchtime. I was hoping for a decent paced Z2 run but all I could muster was a 5.07 pace for just over 13k 150 HR average

Tuesday - After dropping them off in Knock I spent the day in work. Did an easy 1000m when I got home in prep for a harder swim tomorrow morning

    Wednesday AM-
Hopefully the start of some decent few days, had a meeting in town and had a link broken on my chainset so wanted to drop it in beforehand. Got 2000m swim done with 5 x 108 off 2.00/2.10 and 2.20 hadn't time for the 5 x 108 off 2.30

    Wednesday Lunch -
Got scalded in the bike shop, my lazy unwillingness to switch cassettes between a 9 and 10 speed made me purchase another 10 speed so I didnt have to go swapping. Eyed up a bento box as well but backed off when the chain and cassette came to 150 lids. Ouch! Made it home for the local 8k loop, I think I must still be suffering from Kilkee. Flew the first 3k in 4.37 pace and than a war of attrition to keep HR under 155 which had me out at 5.27 pace near the end. Finished it in 5.01 pace 152 HR average

Wednesday Evening: A quick 35k before the soccer which I shouldn't have bothered rushing as the match is useless. Enjoyed the smooth clicking into gear that the 10 speed gave me on the training wheels. Was holding about 31kph after 30k when the Garmin battery died.

Wore the K-Swiss tri suit bottoms which seemed to be fine for the 35k on the undercarriage, will wear them on the long ride this weekend and see how that goes. I am now down to 76kgs which is the lightest I have been in years and the K-Swiss large top is still ridiculously tight on me but to hell with it its going on for the Humbert. Have dropped 4kgs in a month, I still think I am eating well though but just almost no drink or crap food and its coming off. Seems to have no effect on my recent runs but the hills in Kilkee didn't seem to be so bad this year

I wouldn't mind I was going to text you but figured you wouldn't be cycling yesterday evening. I did 33km at 7 yesterday evening.

Is you K-Swiss top like this??? :D

Ha you would want to be that skinny to fit into it, luckily its not a bellytop at least. I saw plenty of the suits in Kilkee with loads of them being of a larger build (fatter) than me and they seemed ok on them

Perhaps I bought a messed up size which tends to happen a lot in TK Maxx

With the training a bit more hot and heavy I will update a bit more regularly or I will lose track. Another triple threat day

Thursday AM: A tiny split on the side panel on my Speedo's earlier in the week was ignored and it had become a decent sized split this morning. New togs needed but chanced it anyways for this morning, with a towel conveniently placed on the walk in. 1800ms with a good bit of kickboard mixed into it, will wear running togs tomorrow and grab a pair in Elverys over the weekend.

Thursday Lunch: A recovery run round the local loop, the running is very poor lately, trying to keep the heart rate in the mid 130's and I was running near 6 minute pace near the end. I used to be close to 5 minute kms for this heart rate 8k Pace = 5.31 AHR = 134. Hoping for a faster run tomorrow

Thursday Evening: Kind of a nothing cycle, went out and cycled for just over an hour. Pushed small bits of it and lazed about for other bits of it. Coming home I was sorry I didnt go out to the local hill and did some repeats which would have been more beneficial than what I did. 30k AHR = 119 Pace = 29.4 kph. Soccer is better tonight at least

Friday Am: With my human alarm clock away on holidays, I clicked snooze on my phone and woke up again 30 minutes later. I never thought I would see the day that 7.15am would be classed as a lie in. Off down to the pool with the running shorts and did 5 x 396 off 8.25, I was happy with this, first four in on low 7.20's and then a slight push towards the end of the 5th set for a 7.10.

    Friday Lunch:
Another slog fest of a run, 10k at 5.10 pace with AHR of 147. Its been a long time since I have been happy with a run. Only one more week to taper so I suppose I will stick at it at this stage. However I cancelled any plans of a bike ride in the evening, had a long one planned for the morning which would be enough.

Saturday AM: The weather was terrible so I had three options wait around till later when it was due to clear a bit, set up the turbo or go for a run. I really didnt want another run today and with no-one around to give out I moved the turbo into the TV room from the shed. 3 hours was all I could muster but I was happy enough with the effort, found a session on turbotraining that was 90 minutes long so did it twice. All in all 6 x 15 minutes at race pace. Watched two episodes of Game of Thrones season 2 and then the first hour of the Tour.

From a man that would have had no interest in cycling before I took up triathlon I was frothing at the mouth waiting for this to start, flicking over now between the Euro athletics, Golf, Cycling, GAA and even the Irish Derby. Steak and Potatoes for dinner, place is in a mess and lawn is not cut :D

Ahhhhhh the single life is nice every now and then!

Sunday AM: A bit better - wasnt looking forward to the run but it was a nice morning so off I went. I am contemplating wearing my Zoot race runners this year rather than a training pair with lock laces so off I went with them on.

Deliberately said I would keep it steady this time and was out on 5.20 pace, again the heart rate didn't stay long in the 120's and very quickly went up into the 140's which is pants for that pace but I was heartened to see that when I glanced down again after 13k I was still in low 140's.

Picked it up slightly to push the heart rate into the mid 150's for the last few kilometres and came in at 5.17 pace overall with an average HR of 144 for 20.5k, while its still a little higher than some previous long runs for that pace its not as bad as some of the runs recently

    You doing Cope this weekend?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Nah I can't afford to miss another long bike and run so I will give it a miss, I might go down and watch though to ease my mothers disappointment at me not doing it (she loves the swim start).

Your old nemesis Cian is doing it alright although you would want to be in some shape to be taking him on this year, if Geraghty doesn't race he might win it!

Nemesis! Don't make me laugh! In my current condition (and I suspect even if I had spent all winter/spring training), he'd beat me in the swim, bike and run. Really impressive improvements. Might bring the young lads with me and go in as a spectator myself...

On paper this would be the most hours ever on a week but it ended up being my worst in years

    Monday AM:
An easy swim in the morning, just getting the stroke right for the rest of the week.

Nothing done for the rest of the day, with Mrs C and the young lad back tomorrow my hard man single image was quickly jettisoned for cleaning and scrubbing and a nightmare overgrown lawn.

    Tuesday:
Up to Knock in the morning where I got a phone call from Mrs C an hour from her arrival time telling me the little man had some type of seizure, was unconscious for a few hours and in intensive care over in Portugal waiting for some scans to come back. As a fairly rookie father this had me in pieces for the day.

Wednesday: With test results trickling in over the Tuesday evening and the little fella was back to his usual self I chanced a run at lunch. After just over two k and struggling to breathe at over 6 minute kilometer pace, I decided to stop. I have always loved rivers and streams so I just sat down beside it for 15-20 minutes and tried to take things in. At this stage, things were looking good as he passed all tests and was looking like he was going to be let out the following day. So threw a few stones in and walked back to the house. The scary thing is the local GP said we were lucky it happened over there as we would have been waiting weeks for a CT and EEG scan over here. Its looking like it was a febrile convulsion which while it looks terrible hopefully wont happen again and if it does we will be more able for it the next time. Its a good deal better than their initial worry of epilepsy

Thursday: Got the good news that he was going to be let out and in time to get them on a Ryanair flight so off I went to Dublin for the day to pick them up

Friday: That little fella wasnt going to be let out of my sight so nothing again today :)

Saturday: The missus has a job interview next Wednesday and she has always been a grafter so I am more or less in complete charge of the little man until then while she gets ready for it. Snatched two hours at different stages between naps on the turbo. Went to a birthday party and stuffed my face on rock and road cake (very nice Gibbo)

    Sunday:
Cleverly finagled a trip into the mother with the young lad in tow and timed it for the Galway Cope triathlon. Of course they got a decent day weather wise the one time I skip it. I thought I would get an 18k run in that afternoon but with him waking early I got called back so only 13. However a decent run for the first time in a long time, set out at 5.20 pace as I wasn't expecting much but was into 4.50ks for the last 5k while holding in the HR 150's. 13k at 5.06 AHR = 144

Perhaps the loss of a few days didn't hurt me too much as I was close to the limit the last few weeks and was getting diminishing returns so another heavy week might have shook me altogether. Will struggle to get anything in until thursday at this stage, perhaps a few swims hopefully and a decent run and bike at the weekend is about all I can hope for

His striking blue eyes were the talk of all the ladies on Saturday! Where did you go wrong CW??? ;)

All the training you've done will stand to you so don;t be stressing over it. As you know and as has been said already, the little lads health is a hell of a lot more important than a race.

My eyes are just as striking but I don't expect you to be staring into my deep pools of blue. Ask your missus though about my blue eyes ;)

Looking at the Galway Cope I would have loved to be racing which is very unlike me, perhaps the first signs of oncoming taper madness

Haven't checked on your log in a while. Scary stuff with the little man, hope all is going well with him. Not long now, I'm chomping at the bit at this stage but I have a chest infection that is becoming increasingly hard to shake despite the GP prescribing me horse tranquilizers.

The lake is perfect and there is nearly 200 signed up at this stage.

Hope the young fella continues to improve and I'll see you Sunday week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,888 ✭✭✭Dory Dory

Sorry about the scare with the little one, but so glad he is okay. Does sort of put it all in perspective, I'm sure. Good luck to you in the race. Is it a week from Sunday?

Hey CW, I hope all is ok,

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Another poor weeks training, I couldn't really do much about it. I did get a dose of reality with trying to look after the young lad and keep the other eye on work at the same time. It didn't happen - work suffered. Pudsey was brought to the specialist on wednesday who was happy enough with him and reckoned he didn't need to see her again unless he gets another convulsion so good news there

    Monday Lunch:
Snuck in for a quick 30 minute swim after bringing the young lad to the local doctors for a check up.

Tuesday Evening: A run around the local loop, heart rate lovely and low but legs were struggling. Put in a couple of k at the end at just under 5 minute pace which felt a bit better. 8k @ 5.16 pace AHR - 139.

Thursday Morning: Just a fairly easy 1 hour on the bike before heading to Dublin

    Thursday Evening:
Up in Dublin but did my usual trick off telling the missusI was just hitting the M50 when I was actually going through Athlone. Just as I arrived at Loughrea lake I get the usual client who is as lazy as sin and has a website launch that evening looking for last minute alterations. So had to cut the swim to 750m. Met two lads who I was going to swim with until they told me they would be doing about 5k. Small world we got in a discussion about one of my nemesis's (The Rabbit) swimming prowess and I disagreed with him on her time in Louisburgh and comented that the swim was long and they had gone cheap on the timing and had transition included in the swim time. Whereas then I was told he was the organiser of that race :o (luckily I said I enjoyed it and hoped they run it again next year)

Anyways ahem moving along swam well but wouldn't have fancied another 1200m or so on top of that which is what I will face next weekend. So will need plenty of pool time over the next few days

This mornings swim was then cancelled as Mrs C is feeling a bit run down after all that has happened so I was on baby duty.

Sister home for the states this weekend so training will be tough again - although she has two twin daughters that are state champion level in freestyle and breaststroke respectively so I am sure I can blag a swim with them and style it as a a bonding session with the nieces.

Bog of course is set for next week - I could have said this months ago as brother in law loves to piss me off. I will do monday and tuesday but we will be heading for a row if he expects any more from me
