Undoubtedly there are a significant amount of slackers, but it applies across the board,both Public Sector and Private. I've worked in both and have seen it in both.

Where I work now (Public Service) we have our share as well but the vast majority are conscientious workers that don't abuse the system.

What people also forget is that these 'stats' are a sweeping statement and don't take into account long term illness which unfortunately is a fact of life. Using these stats, if I'm working with one other person and he's out sick for 6 months for a perfectly legitimate reason then our department average is 3 months - even though I haven't had a day off. But if they dig deeper then they don't get a headline !!

Another point is that I work shifts - 2 days on/off, 3 days on 2 off etc. If I'm out sick for 2 weeks that's roughly 7 working days - but my sick is counted as 14 days. Whilst in theory I am out for 14 days there is no 'lost' days for my due off days in any case. But they're still added to the stats and to my sick leave record...
