Hi everyone,

Good morning, hope all is well.

We have invited well-known Vatican Observatory astronomer Br Guy Consolmagno, SJ to speak in Dublin on Thursday, March 21st.

Br Guy is a globally recognized populariser of astronomy and speaks widely about the Church and Science. He is Curator of the Vatican Observatory Meteorite Collection and also sits on a number of Committees of the International Astronomical Union.

Br Guy will be in Dublin on March 20th and 21st, and is giving a public lecture in Gonzaga College, Ranelagh, Dublin 6 on Thursday, March 21st at 7:45pm. All are welcome and admission is FREE.

Br Guy is co-author of the popular "Turn Left at Orion" book that is regularly recommended as a must-read book for amateur astronomers.

Our October lecture will take place on Monday 21st October at 8PM in Ely House.

The speaker is Dr Masha Chernyakova from DCU and she will be talking about 'Puzzling Gamma-ray Binaries : Theory and Observations'.

In this talk Masha Chernyakova will present these objects and discuss what makes them so special. The Gamma- ray sky is very different from what we are used to viewing at lower energies.
In particular only 5 binaries are seen at TeV (tera electron-volts) energies. The public are encouraged to submit questions to the speaker in advance of the presentation.

This is a free event and all are welcome.

As part of Science Week, Midlands Astronomy Club will be hosting a Stargazing in Stradbally event in, well, Stradbally in County Laois this Saturday night, November 16th from 8pm. It will take place in Stradbally Library, and will see MAC members host a series of short talks and demonstrations. If the weather is good, we'll ditch the talks and head outside with the telescopes!

Fun for all the family, FREE event, and open to all.

Title: 'Open Night on Astronomy'
Admission: FREE, all are welcome.

On Tuesday December 3rd next from 8pm, members of Midlands Astronomy Club will host an Open Night on Astronomy in the Presbyterian Hall on High Street in Tullamore that will give you an opportunity to learn more about Amateur Astronomy and the night sky. With a focus on telescopes and their accessories, this event will allow visitors (members and non-members) to bring their telescope and ask questions, view demonstrations and take home free aides that will help them in their quest to observe the wonders of deep space. It will also be a night to ask questions that maybe Santa would ask in time for Christmas, if he were here and posed with a letter asking for a telescope.

The event is a free one, and members will have on display various tools, such as books and CDs, free downloadable help guides, software tutorials, as well as telescopes, eyepieces and tips on cleaning your telescope and accessories.

Galway Astronomy Festival takes place on Feb 1st where members of the public are invited to a special event dedicated to unravelling the mysteries of the Universe. It is being held at the Westwood House Hotel and it's theme is "City of Stars" with the emphasis is about how our exploration of the Cosmos has inspired communities and cultures in our city that would not otherwise do so; to think about the Universe.

The Galway Astronomy Festival is a celebration and exhibition of astronomy. A spectacle of stars, planets and space with presentations from top names in the world of astronomy from the UK and USA, activities, trade stands, advice, observing, big telescopes and guidance, a monster raffle and much more

The event includes six talks split into two sessions in the morning and evening. A new lunchtime interlude with two mini observing workshops and a visit to the NUI Galway Observatory.

Hi All

We are pleased to announce another public event with free entry at Rathbeggan Lakes just 10 min from the M50. We will meet up for Super Moon Sunday whereby there will be a full moon at its closest point to earth (perigee) for 2014 18:09 UTC. Bring your telescope or binoculars if you have some and join in the fun. The perseid meteor shower is also due to start around the date and you never know - you may just see a meteor through the moonlight. Starts at 18:30. Free Entry if you mention Meath Astronomy on entry.

This night is a celebration and dedication to some of our members who were staunch supporters of Midlands Astronomy Club (Tullamore Astronomical Society) since it was founded in 1986. There will be sandwiches and refreshments, slideshows, and a dedication to the late:

- Vincent McDonnell (founder, long-time Treasurer and our first Librarian, died July 2005).
- Carthage Morrissey (long-time member, staunch supporter of our Site clean-up days and maker of 2 observing chairs, died November 2012).
- Ollie Walsh (long-time member and maker of a 10 inch Dobsonian telescope, died December 2013).
- Trevor Rainsberry (former Chairperson, Librarian and the man responsible for allowing MAC (TAS) to purchase our 1/2 acre in Clonminch for the Observatory, the first of its kind of any club in Ireland, died April 2014).

August's SkyMaps will also be available on the night FREE.

We hope you can come along and celebrate with us!
