AKW A+V Protec's train toilet bioreactor units use bacteria to break down waste (RG 5.10 p68). Heaters sterilise waste water which can then be harmlessly discharged to the track, leaving small volumes of solid waste in the tank for disposal approximately every two months.
Presumably the heaters would require additional power although this might be dealt with in the course of a normal refit by installation of energy saving technologies such as LED lighting etc.

Sounds good but wouldn't those heaters affect fuel consumption just like air conditioning units in cars affect the Mpg rates?

presumably, but the argument one imagines is that you save on maintenance hours involved in servicing conventional retention tanks in addition to capital cost in more extensive modifications to fit tanks where not currently present.

well with unit trains you can just cyphon heat from the underslung engine 'for free'

Why would it be cheaper to stick bioreactors on individual trains than to have one large reprocessing plant at the trains base ??

possibly with networks as big as the US or Canada and the lenght of time trains are rostered to be out it makes it easier?
