    The world's first selfie
    640px-RobertCornelius.jpg

Robert Cornelius, an American pioneer in photography, produced a daguerreotype of himself in 1839 which is also one of the first photographs of a person. Because the process was slow he was able to uncover the lens, run into shot for a minute or more, and then replace the lens cap.[citation needed] He recorded on the back "The first light Picture ever taken. 1839."

Warning: "Contains brutal raw pictures of genocide that may cause distress"

The ISIS Sunni extremists wants to brutally exterminate every Christian, Yazidi & Alawite they see. According to them others are 'Kafirs' or infidels & a kafir has no human value in Islam, they can be exploited for their skills, for sex, for slavery or for anything, or just be killed off. These extremists believe they have great rewards in heaven for killing kafirs. They are doing the most gruesome & utmost evil acts that you can think of, irrespective of age or gender! I wonder why does the main stream media refuse to cover these horrible acts on the nightly news?

Mod note - We realise these are hard hitting pics but they portray a reality of what is happening right now. We have deleted the more extreme and upsetting of them (if you believe there could be worse pics). Peaceboi has put a warning on the post so please do not click on the links if you think you will be upset.

Warning: "Contains brutal raw pictures that may cause distress"

Becoming more evident about the diversity of the ISIS ISIL jihadists, as this fella came as far from Sydney to render his sacred services and chances are these fiends would be readmitted to their western home countries when they are finished with their ferocious slaughtering.

In 2012, poachers killed over 300 elephants using grenades and machine guns in Bouba Ndjidah National Park. Over 100,000 elephants have been slaughtered for ivory, in the last three years alone.
I think, personally, given the intelligence of elephants, the word "murdered" is more apt.

One of the saddest things I've ever seen. The video is heart breaking. Poor Tyke had a tortured life and a horrific death. :(

Not a photo, but a letter.
    I felt it belonged here.

Journalist James Foley had been unable to send his family a written letter because everything he wrote was confiscated by his captors.

So he asked a fellow hostage who was due to be released to memorize a message to his family.

    This breaks my heart.

    http://www.freejamesfoley.org/
    "Dear Family and Friends,

I remember going to the Mall with Dad, a very long bike ride with Mom. I remember so many great family times that take me away from this prison. Dreams of family and friends take me away and happiness fills my heart.

I know you are thinking of me and praying for me. And I am so thankful. I feel you all especially when I pray. I pray for you to stay strong and to believe. I really feel I can touch you even in this darkness when I pray.

Eighteen of us have been held together in one cell, which has helped me. We have had each other to have endless long conversations about movies, trivia, sports. We have played games made up of scraps found in our cell…we have found ways to play checkers, Chess, and Risk… and have had tournaments of competition, spending some days preparing strategies for the next day’s game or lecture. The games and teaching each other have helped the time pass. They have been a huge help. We repeat stories and laugh to break the tension.

I have had weak and strong days. We are so grateful when anyone is freed; but of course, yearn for our own freedom. We try to encourage each other and share strength. We are being fed better now and daily. We have tea, occasional coffee. I have regained most of my weight lost last year.

I think a lot about my brothers and sister. I remember playing Werewolf in the dark with Michael and so many other adventures. I think of chasing Mattie and T around the kitchen counter. It makes me happy to think of them. If there is any money left in my bank account, I want it to go to Michael and Matthew. I am so proud of you, Michael and thankful to you for happy childhood memories and to you and Kristie for happy adult ones.

And big John, how I enjoyed visiting you and Cress in Germany. Thank you for welcoming me. I think a lot about RoRo and try to imagine what Jack is like. I hope he has RoRo’s personality!

And Mark... so proud of you too Bro. I think of you on the West coast and hope you are doing some snowboarding and camping, I especially remember us going to the Comedy Club in Boston together and our big hug after. The special moments keep me hopeful.

Katie, so very proud of you. You are the strongest and best of us all!! I think of you working so hard, helping people as a nurse. I am so glad we texted just before I was captured. I pray I can come to your wedding…. now I am sounding like Grammy!!

Grammy, please take your medicine, take walks and keep dancing. I plan to take you out to Margarita’s when I get home. Stay strong because I am going to need your help to reclaim my life.

    Jim"

Probably not world shocking but I came across this image on the web after a long dig through it. Its a photo of Ayrton Senna the evening before he was killed in the San Marino GP, May 1st, 1994. At the hotel he was staying at, there was a wedding on. The couple spotted him and asked him if they could take a photo. 24 hours later he would be dead.

Not sure is this world changing, but I found this fascinating when I saw it on tv a couple of years ago.

The Biggest Rat in the world.

    Bosavi Woolly Rat

First discovered in 2009 in Papui New Guinea, in the crater of an extinct volcano known as Mount Bosavi, during the filming of the 'Lost Land of the Volcano' BBC wildlife documentary series.

The 82 centimeters (32 inch) long rat weighs around 1.5 Kilograms (3.3lb) and has a silver-brown coat of long, thick fur. A captured specimen showed no fear of humans.

    Chaos of Khomeini's funeral:

    http://www.newstatesman.com/asia/2009/03/khomeini-funeral-body-crowd
Yet even here, the crowd surged past the makeshift barriers. John Kifner wrote in the New York Times that the “body of the ayatollah, wrapped in a white burial shroud, fell out of the flimsy wooden coffin, and in a mad scene people in the crowd reached to touch the shroud”. A frail white leg was uncovered. The shroud was torn to pieces for relics and Khomeini’s son Ahmad was knocked from his feet. Men jumped into the grave. At one point, the guards lost hold of the body. Firing in the air, the soldiers drove the crowd back, retrieved the body and brought it to the helicopter, but mourners clung on to the landing gear before they could be shaken off. The body was taken back to north Tehran to go through the ritual of preparation a second time.

Earliest Known Color Photographs of San Francisco
At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906, an earthquake hit San Francisco. By today's measurements, it would register at a magnitude of 7.8.

Within four days, 80% of the city was utterly destroyed by the Earth's upheaval and fire. Out of a population of 410,000, between one-half and three-quarters became homeless; up to 3,000 people died.

Fires burned for four days and nights, causing the vast majority of the city's devastation and destroying 25,000 buildings.

Six months later, inventor Frederick Eugene Ives arrived in the ruins, carrying one of his creations: the photochromoscope, a very early color and 3D camera. Commercially available since 1897, Ives used the device to capture these four images, reproduced here as single frames, and in their original stereo pairs.

    Just to clear this up:

Goalie Terry Sawchuk sports fake scars and wounds applied by a make-up artist to simulate injuries accumulated in 16 years of professional hockey, 1966.

interesting article blog complaining about a Tumblr post that doesn't exist anymore regarding pictures above and really shows how history can be written in whatever way people see fit

Shame we can't see the tumblr post to see how exactly how that was revising history (looks to me like the blog writer has only taken issue with the use of the word "children" in the Tumblr post to describe what are clearly adults), but that fella is still pouring acid into a pool to get the blacks out. And the blog writer is revising history himself by posting the caption provided with the Tumblr post "June, 1964. Black children integrate the swimming pool of the Monson Motel. To force them out, the owner pours acid into the water." and then goes on to witter about the hysteria of claiming that Brock was pouring acid unto/upon/on the protestors, when that's clearly not what it said. Half of what he's complaining about just isn't there, he invented that detail just as surely as the Tumblr author invented the "children".

Blog piece innaccurately complaining about an inaccurate Tumblr post aside, the caption for the picture posted by Scruffy...The Janitor above "In response to a protest by black and white people against the whites only policy of the pool at the Monson Motor Lodge in Florida, hotel owner James Brock dumps acid in to the water. The civil rights act was passed the next day." remains factually correct.

Might not shake the world, but how and ever...

Satellite images of countries from space at night show the amount of built up areas are in a country. The more lights there are, the more cities/towns, the more economic activity there is, the better-off a country is, etc.

Below is a stark contrast between The Republic Of Korea (South Korea; a capitalist country with a huge economy and the producer of a vast amount of the world's electronics and so on) and The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea; the world's hermit kingdom where oppression and poverty dominates). The difference between the two is staggering. South Korea glitters like a jewel. The darkness swamps over the North like a plague, with only a pitiful amount of light denoting Pyongyang and other minor cities.

Conversely, Belgium is lit up like a Christmas tree at night in a way that would horrify the average penny pinching dad.

    GJ2t2sv.jpg

Rumour has it that at one time the minister responsible for street lighting had a brother who happened to install street lighting and somehow the brother miraculously ended up with a contract to light every stretch of motorway in Belgium. I've driven through Belgium at night many times and can confirm that the motorways are fully illuminated. It makes Belgium very easy to pick out from space.

(The north of Italy is also well lit up as are certain areas of England, but those are densely populated areas. All of Belgium is lit up, and it has significantlly less population density.)
