A sign of people having more money in their pockets these days perhaps. Although, betting is a fairly certain cure for that.

If there is one thing that stayed strong during the recession it was the hoardes of people still going through bookies doors. I know because I work right next door to one and it's never quiet.

A lot of bookies closed down in that time though.

Two closed close to me, let all the staff go and re-opened in another bigger unit around the corner a few months later.

The place is turning into a grave yard so again Bank of ireland is gone the 18th

That beauty place in the parkway seems to be gone too now - it's a calender shop.

That's gone for ages, the unit was empty for a long time. First they moved the nail bar to the hairdressers, Folly Republic, and then the tanning part wasn't profitable enough to sustain the place on its own.

The calendar shop will only be open for a short while too, they always open around Christmas for a a couple of months

They should split the calendars into 171 and 172 calendars like the government did to suit the car dealers. Spread the cash flow more evenly across the year. #simples

X Men Barbers and the accompanying women's hairdressers in Newtown Centre, Annacotty closed down last week. A real pity as Hassan is an excellent barber. He's worried he'll find it tough to pick up a job in town because he reckons he's too old, so if anyone hears of anything, keep him in mind!

The reason seems to be the jacking up of the rents. I was talking to one of the workers in there who said the Chinese closed down as well recently. Did anyone else hear about this? I heard it a few months ago, that Dolores McNamara had bought the place and pretty much doubled the rents on the advice of Eddie Hobbs. Laundrette closed down a while back as well but it looks like the beauticians' next door are expanding into it.

WTF...doubling the rent?? The existing rent must have been extremely low to justify doubling it. Regardless, doubling it is still extreme, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas. She must be confident that there are new businesses/clients ready to move in....

Didn't last long. I live near there and only found myself going to it once.

Would love to see a Lidl or Aldi in the city centre.

It was ludicrous when you have the centra only down the street.

Not that surprised about wacky shoes. The range of shoes was terrible for the last few years and the place felt odd as a shop. Just my own opinion though and a terrible blow for the staff.

Sad to see them go after so many years. They lost that young market to the likes of Schuh/JD but mainly to online shopping and every high street fashion retailer that is selling cheap own brand footwear. I believe they own the building so they'll get a decent rent roll from it. Be interesting to see who goes in there. I know of one new shoe store that should be opening in the city centre in early 2017. Shoe Rack closed, Korky's replaced them.....life moves on.
