    Ok all,

My original plan was to get a Holden Manaro, and that didnt work out, which is prob for the best as im moving to the south again, so cant afford the whopping tax bill.

Now im after an alfa GT.

Ive been looking at either a 1.9JTD or 2.0JTS.

Ive been driving diesel saloons for the last few years, current motor a honda accord (dont ask) and now i want somthing fun and sporty but looks the mutts nuts.

This in mind, ive been leaning towards the 2.0JTS, but there doesnt seems to be many out there at the moment, but the place is awash with 1.9JTD adverts.

Ive been reading a few threads
    http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f...

    http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-and-gt...

Now there isnt many Alfa/Fiat showrooms about, plus there arnt much in the way of alfa specialists about.

With all this factored in, which would be best between the diesel and petrol (no V6 unfortunatly :( )

    Cheers
    -V-

A purist would say it is a sin to have an oil burner under the bonnet of an Alfa Romeo but I'm a bit fan of diesel cars and the 1.9 multi-jet is one of the best in it's class. It would also be cheaper to VRT too if that is a factor in your decision.

BTW check out the prices down here, they really have dropped lately.

The 2.0 JTS will be a rare enough car if you're looking in Ireland, although I think this is absolute sex!: http://www.carzone.ie/search/Alfa-Romeo/GT/1.9-MONZ/200906191764360/advert?channel=CARS

...didn't they close down last week ?

OP - you need to drive both. I have that 1.9Mjet in my 9-3 and it's a hoot. The JTS, though, would be cheaper, and probably cheaper to service, too.

Have owned both a petrol and diesel GT from new... the JTDm engine'd GT kicked the arse of the petrol equivalent in nearly every respect.
    No comparison IMO.

Do it, you won't be dissatisfied :)

If you've cash, get on a flight and import a diesel blackline from the UK for buttons.

The 2.0JTS is basically the 2.0 twinspark engine with the small spark plug removed from each cylinder to make way for the direct injection. Cam belts carry the same health warning, change every 36k to avoid destruction of your engine. Regular servicing will keep them sweet but neglect one at your peril.

well i was planning to buy here and trade in my UK car to a dealer here, which they dont seem to have a prob with.

Currently looking at this and been emailing the dealer in question. I love it. its a Collezione edition and i think it looks stunning.

the 2.4JTD actually sounds great when revving but its not available on the GT as far as I can see.

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,818 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

That does sound good for a diesel, i've always liked the noise of a good 5cyl. It's still nowhere near as nice-sounding as an Alfa four, though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭vengeance52

sound is important, but it the overall package i want, power handeling and just the experience

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,237 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

There's no 2.4JTD available in the GT (unfortunately). I'm not even sure that you could drop a 2.4 into the GT (I've been wondering :))

I have a JTD myself, recently had it remapped and am pleased with the results. Sounds like a tractor when idling for sure, but still a great drive.

You can also add a limited slip differential to the JTD (not to the 1.8 or 2.0), which can be fun (I added one around 6 months after buying).

You'll need to change the timing belt on the JTD at around 60,000 miles-many folk say that you also need to change the water pump as well as this is what seizes and causes the belt to snap, but Gerry in Ti didn't feel the need to change mine a few thousand miles ago.

Tbh, it's only the diesel haters that seem to opt for the 2.0 over the JTD, which is fine of course, but if you do much driving (I use mine every day), you may be better off with the JTD.

The later model GTs have a slightly different engine to the older ones as far as I can tell-same power, but slightly lower emissions (Diesel Alfas are crap from a tax point of view) Some of the newer JTD models also have a 'sport' button that effectivley changes the engine map to give it an extra 30bhp/50nm odd AFAIK (bit like the standard remap you can get at a tuners).

But.......if you can afford the VRT and road tax, the only petrol GT I would look at is the 3.2 V6-now that's a great sound.

Having lived with and experienced both its not that bad. The relative performance and economy being the trade off.

Correct, although a shame. It didn't fit.

Euro III and IV emission engines...the newer ones being the JTDm

Although the sound of the V6 is superb, the power versus displacement is pretty p!ss poor - that's not Alfa bashing, I've owned 3 different ones in the past.

Not in those terms. Basically said that if they want me to buy the car, they need to make a more realistic offer for trade in, before we even go over the asking price, and its up to them.

Where are you based? There's a thread in the Ireland lounge on Alfaowner that discusses recommended independents and dealers.

Based in Cavan/Monaghan now. The dealer i was emailing was in Laois

Didn't fit? The GT is based on the 156 sportwagon, the 2.4JTD fits just fine in that. I'd say Alfa were just more concerned that it would have taken sales from the Brera than any technical difficulties in getting it in there.

That crowd (Lismard) are in liquidation/closing down-there was a thread on it here recently-I'm surprised they are taking trade-ins?

You're not in a great part of the country for Alfa servicing-would be awkward to get to Dublin unless you had a day off.

Thats prob why i got such a terrible price, plus the advert did have "Sale Price" attached to it. http://www.carzone.ie/search/Alfa-Romeo/GT/1.9-JTD*/200838190022209/advert?channel=CARS

Yup im in a terrible place when it comes to servicing, as even though the local mechanics are good at what they do, it takes a bit more attention when it comes to alfas, from what ive read.

That's not what I have read on Alfaowner. There are technical issues and I have only heard of one tuner who reckoned it was possible (but it hadn't actually been done). I would be happy for someone to prove me wrong as if/when the 1.9 gives up the ghost, I would love to replace it with the 2.4!

There is a guy based in Wexford who will travel to service your car and works weekends-but he's not a professional at this stage (as far as I know), but he knows his ARs.

While AR certainly need more attention than most other marques, I'm not sure that they need specialist attention at all times/services.
