How much oil do you normally put into your car when the light comes on? And how long do you expect it to last?

You check the dipstick as you fill. Usually, the amount of oil required between hi & lo on a dipstick is 1 litre. Just because the dipstick is 'dry' doesn't mean the engine has no oil but it obviously needs topping up. Just pour oil in a bit at a time and dip it regularly.

How long the oil lasts is dependant on engine type and also on mileage.

This light you mention - is it red or yellow?

I posted about it on here before.

Its a red flashing light(flashes and beeps 3 times) and then turns off. It happens going around a long bend or corners. Im going through a litre every 3 weeks or so. I know there is a problem but wont have the money to get it sorted til after xmas.

Yeah that'll happen, your tilting the oil away from the sensor when you take the corner.

Sounds to me like it's the oil pressure light rather than an oil level light. TBH, you need to have this investigated - especially if it happens when the oil level is at 'HI' on the dipstick. You could have a blocked sump gauze. Keep an eye on the oil level regularly - become great friends with your dipstick - low oil pressure can destroy an engine beyond repair.

Or - worse still - the level of oil in the sump is so low that as the car rounds a bend, the oil sloshes to one side and the pipe that draws the oil form the sump is no longer immersed in oil and therefore pumps no oil. This results in the engine running dry for a short time which causes rapid wear. This is the most likely cause of the red light coming on. Remember that a red 'oil can' light is an oil pressure warning not an oil level warning. An oil pressure switch (sensor) is mounted in the cylinder head (usually) as it's the point of lowest pressure.
