It sounds like it needs to be coded again or lost it's coding for some reason. Bring it to a dealer and see what they can do.

Does the key match the locks mechanically?

It's not unknown for scammers to sell you a car, give you the wrong key and come back with the right one later to steal it back.

To check this, you need to separate the key, from the fob.
Assuming its the VW key im thinking of, there should be a little tab on one of the short side of the key, near the keyring. Push that in and the keyring should slide out from the fob to reveal the key.

Next, on your car door if you cannot see any place to insert the key you may have to remove the cover from the door handle. Immediately to the left of the door handle, there should be a cover, about 1 inch big. Get down on your knees and look under it and there should be a little gap where your key can slot into. Use that gap and your key to pop off the cover.

Underneath should be a standard key hole. Stick it in a give it a twirl ;)

yes key is the correct one, I thought there may be a cheaper alternative than the dealer

So the key has become unpaired from the remote locking system.

Does it start the car if you put it in the ignition?

Sounds like it needs to be programmed. This says its for when only one key is working but have a look it's only something simple like this that has to be done.

No bother have a look around the net it's only something simple like this but specific to your car.
