    Technically you dont have to sign a contract if you wish

    I never said you did. I was merely pointing out if the electricy is cheaper while on a contract and then the price of units go up once the contract period expires then surely it's ok for the customer to switch supplier.

    I'm with Airtricity myself and can switch at any time
