Hi, windows xp system here in work.

Somehow the settings tabs have gone missing from the properties window

Can anyone shed any light on this?

spyware can sometimes disable parts of windows.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921049

have a look at this. it involves changing registry settings.

if you are at work, the options could have been disabled by an admin. do you have a windows server?

That page failed to open here.

    I'll try it at home.

The appearance tab wont let you select the desktop pic, or let you edit the screensaver.
The only way to set the desktop pic is to right click on an image and do it that way.

Doubt it was blocked, everything else has been left alone

Windows can be set to block only indivdual things.

The link i posted has settings for all the tabs.

Will a relatively useless computer savvy person be able to do it, do you think?

    Click start button

    click run

    enter 'regedit' -without the '

you see what look like folders on left

just follow the directions in the link

probably best to create a restore point first

Hi, windows xp system here in work.

If it is a work computer, then this could be by design. The system administrator might have changed your user permissions, so I would talk with whoever does your IT first.

If that isn't the case, a good spyware/virus check would probably be in order.

Usually they won't undo the registry settings changed.

If it's blocked by work admin then regedit should be blocked too.

Not all work computers are on a domain and if not, it sounds like it just changed on its own which would indicate spyware.

It's a work computer, policys are created so you can't access certain settings / areas on purpose.

Luckily, Kelly comes to the rescue - http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - Run the link below.

Click to Restore Desktop and Screensaver Tabs

If you run that .reg file I hotlinked, it will restore your tabs, it takes literally 2 seconds.

Save the file to your desktop (right click > save target as / save link as) making sure you select the type as "All Files" and not Text Document).

PS: Call it desktop.reg when you save it. The .reg part is very needed.
