Belfast and Dublin the rest are large towns if you go by population. Also depends what you call a city - Kilkenny and Armagh are termed cities for ecclesiastical reasons, I think, and ffs even Newry is now called a city when it's just a sprawling kip of a town.

    Cork, Limerick, Galway...

According to the local government act, there are 5 cities, which have city councils. They are Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. Kilkenny is allowed to call itself a city because of it, but does not have the same powers as the main ones.

Lisburn, Derry, Newry, Belfast, Dublin, Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, Galway Limerick I think all are cities. I know the 2 new Northern ones were as a result of 50 years of the Queen Elizabeth 2 back in 03, there were several ones also on the UK mainland.

 how is this a history or heritage question?

Perhaps he is wondering how many cities have received charters as a city, which would be a legitimate historical question. He hasn't articulated this well, if this is the question.

More challenging would be a list of all cities and towns in Ireland which have been given charters in the past 1300 years, and the dates of these charters of course. It's doable, but time-consuming.

Sounds more like a Junior Cert question. :D

OP has a day to clarify historical and/or heritage aspects, or thread gets locked.

This question is boring at this stage as one fool will always bring it up, and then three arguements popup: There is 5 (Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford), There is 6 (Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny) and then someone says "None cause there all tiny, like". 1 hour later everyone is argueing and it gets locked.

The answer is 7 (Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny and Cashel)

    That would be interesting indeed.

Maybe thread could be turned into a thread based on the above comment by Rebelheart? Otherwise please lock before this descends into madness.

If Rebelheart or anyone else wants to start a thread on that historical topic that's fine, this thread is locked though.
